What is meant by the term sustainability? The term Sustainability means “the capacity to endure”. It is the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level. A sustainable product can be reduced down after use and re-used. It’s materials can be extracted from the product and used for future products. What is the purpose of a sustainable design? The purpose of a sustainable product is to reduce/avoid waste and damage to the environment. I sustainable product is produced in a way which has minimal impact on the environment and is designed in such a way that it will fulfill its purpose effectively then leave minimal waste once used. How have human activities lead to climate change? Humans have greatly effected the earth’s climate through burning fossil fuels, coal and natural gas as well as deforestation and several agricultural and industrial practices. By doing these mankind has increased atmospheric concentrations of methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. Why is sustainable design practice important with the current booming world population when combined with the increasingly rapid depletion of the world’s available natural resources? With the huge population increase predicted for earths future man kind needs to learn that our resources are finite and that we will run out quite rapidly if we continue to use and waste at our current rate. If we incorporate sustainable design into products designed and make them in an environmentally friendly was we will prolong the earth’s life a lot longer. If we are able to re-use and re-cycle our materials once used we will not be so dependent on extracting resources from the planet. What is the short-term effect of poor sustainable practice in reference to the four main design impacts with places, products or services (use of materials, how a product is manufactured, how a product is used and how it is disposed of) The short term effects of poor sustainable practice is the immediate effect the waste will have on the environment, an un sustainable product will poison the earth and leave a scar for future generations to clean up. What is the long-term impact on future generations of people if we as a race continue to ignore the destruction we are causing to our planet? Eventually the planet will become so unclean that it will have an effect on the health of every human being on the planet, the earth will become so unclean that food will be either dirty/poisoned and we, as a race, will struggle to maintain the level of health we have today. Many species will be whipped out due to unclean land or poisoned waters. The effect this will have on the remaining species will be detrimental, as the food chain will be massively damaged. The scarcity of resources will probably cause many people to go too more extreme measures or pay a higher price to obtain such much-needed resources.
