PLANET AID Textile, Shoe, and Book Recycling Over the past few weeks, large yellow containers bearing a “Planet Aid” logo have been appearing at town transfer stations and businesses. Information on the boxes encourages people to donate clothing and shoes. Planet Aid collects second-hand clothing, textiles, shoes, boots, handbags, bedding, blankets, pillows, towels, curtains, and books. The proceeds from the sale of these items funds projects to improve the lives of people in Africa and Asia. Their objectives include education, development, protecting the environment, and relief aid. All items should be reusable and clean. All items should be placed in plastic bags and deposited into the collection boxes. Please don’t leave items outside of the box. The boxes are emptied on a regular basis by Planet Aid. There is no charge to the town or the residents for this service. There are also many organizations in the local area that accept clothing and other items as well - Rutland County Women's Shelter, local school nurses, Salvation Army, Red Cross, The Mission, local charitable organizations, and Good Will. After many of these organizations have utilized what they can, they are also donating what they cannot make use of to Planet Aid, thereby saving trash disposal fees and giving the items yet another opportunity for reuse. Consider giving to one of these organizations whether you are doing a whole house cleanout, spring cleaning, organizing your closet, or have just a few items to donate. You will be helping people in need, saving reusable items from the trash, saving your town trash disposal fees, and giving your used items another chance at life.
