The degree audit of graduate coursework in Chinese and education, conducted by the
Department of Classical and Oriental Studies, the Office of Educational Services, and the Office
of the Registrar’s Degree Audit Division, ensures that candidates who complete the program in
Chinese Education are proficient in content and pedagogy.

The assessment tool or description of the assignment
To ensure that candidates who apply for graduation meet all program requirements in Latin and
education, candidates complete a degree audit application that is reviewed by and must be
approved by the Division Head of Chinese in the School of Arts and Science, the Coordinator of
Educational Services in the School of Education, and the Hunter College Office of the
Registrar’s Degree Audit Division. The Division Head of Chinese reviews the candidates’
transcript to check for successful completion of content courses in Chinese. Upon approval, the
degree audit is forwarded to the School of Education’s Office of Educational Services for review
of successful completion of education courses, a second review of the Chinese coursework,
verification that the candidate met any admission conditions, and successful completion of the
professional teaching portfolio and technology assessments (exit requirements). Upon approval
by both the Department of Classical and Oriental Studies and the School of Education, the
degree audit application is forwarded to the Hunter College Office of the Registrar’s Degree
Audit Division for a final check that all course requirements, GPA requirements, exit
requirements, and admissions conditions are met.
The degree audit approval represents successful completion of the following courses, through

Course Descriptions
CHIN 701 Chinese Phonology and Romanization (3 credits)

This course will introduce Chinese phonetics, phonology, and the major sound transcription
systems commonly used in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and found in Chinese
dictionaries. Emphasis will be on acquiring accurate tones and standard pronunciation for
English-speaking learners as well as learners who speak a Chinese dialect at home.
CHIN 702 Modern Chinese Pedagogical Grammar (3 credits)

This course will introduce the grammatical system of modern Mandarin Chinese, including the
characteristics of grammatical morphemes, word order, and sentence and discourse structures.
The content will highlight difficulties for native speakers of English and helping them to
overcome these difficulties effectively. The course will discuss pedagogical issues concerning
grammar instruction such as how it differs from syntax; what grammar points need to be taught
at each level; and the methods of teaching grammar.
CHIN 703 Chinese Orthography and Lexicology (3 credits)

This course will give an overview of the development of Chinese orthography and Chinese
lexicology. Differences between the spoken and written styles will be discussed. The
relationship of formation methods of the Chinese lexicon to syntactic functions and the process
of character-based meaning derivation will be emphasized.
