Statement of District Support
The Teachers Discovering History as Historians project is funded by the
Department of Education. Due to the special guidelines of the program, we are obliged to include only those teachers whose districts will agree to provide data regarding student achievement on tests of social studies performance administered by New York State. Our goal is to improve social studies grades by ten percent over three years in participant classrooms. It will be up to each teacher to secure that information and provide it to the Project Director and/or the project evaluator. We must request that district administrators acknowledge their understanding of this obligation and agree to support their participating teachers in reporting this data.
Secondly, this program is an opportunity to provide professional staff development at no cost to your district. The grant provides a $26 per hour stipend to districts for up to 60 hours of the summer seminar.
Professional development compensation rates vary, the hourly stipend will be paid to the district and distribution of teacher payment, taxes and benefits are the responsibility of each district. We request districts to provider release time and substitutes one day each spring and fall for the two annual staff development days. We are requesting that district administrators acknowledge their understanding of this obligation to provide the release time.
Please have your district superintendent, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, or your building principal acknowledge their understanding of these responsibilities and their agreement to provide those data and support for the staff development days by signing below.

Statement of Personal and Professional Commitment
The Teachers Discovering History as Historians project is in its fourth year of implementation, the first years solely in Chautauqua County. Through it we are developing a support network among American history teachers, as well as a cadre of teacher leaders in American history curriculum and instruction. We are interested in promoting systematic change in the way American history is taught, it is important that teachers sustain involvement in the project throughout the year. This commitment includes:
Attending this summer’s seminar July 9 through July 18, 2007, reimbursed through the grant at your district’s professional development rate.
Attending an inservice day workshop in the fall and spring.
Evaluating/assessing project related activities.
As a member of a group, developing a lesson plan/classroom activity during your participation on a topic related to U.S. History. The lesson plan/classroom activity will be housed in a web site repository for access by teachers locally and nationally.
Participation in evaluating/assessing project related activities with the Brown Education Alliance.
Teachers are also encouraged but not required to:
Disseminate project-developed resources at district-level meetings and social studies conferences.
Participate in the evolution and growth of the Teachers Discovering History as Historians web site and TDHAH listserve. The site is intended to mirror the Social Studies Core Curriculum and will assist all teachers in the discipline.
Interacting with project staff and teaching colleagues in Chautauqua County to enhance American history education through meetings, listservs and blogs.
Due to the fact that this is a federally funded program, all materials created by participants become public domain and may be posted on the Worldwide Web for teachers to use as resources.
I understand that I will be paid at my district’s professional development rate. Please check here
By submitting this application with its statement of personal and professional commitment, we assume you are committing yourself to the range of activities associated with participation with this project.
If you have any questions related to the project and your sustained involvement in it, please call or email
