AO Hesse Collection of German Africana (rare manuscripts,
publications, maps and pamphlets)
Provenance: Original Collection was established in 1961. Items are
donated and bought. Items are still being added to the Collection.
Shelf arrangement: Items are arranged according to DCC

JL van Schaik Collection (rare Africana publications and
pamphlets)
Provenance : Donated by Mr JL van Schaik in 1965
Shelf arrangement: Items are arranged in numerical order according to
Donor’s List / accession number. Library Management agreed that the
publications would be arranged in the Unisa Library in the same order
as in Mr van Schaik’s Home Library

Frederik Wagener Collection (rare Africana publications, framed
sketches, maps, artifacts, documents and fragile newspapers)
Provenance: On permanent loan, since 1982, from the SA
Government’s Department of Education

Department has requested that the Collection should be re-arranged
alphabetically, according to author

Bloemfontein and Umtata Library Cathedrals Collections (rare
theological publications )
Provenance: Collection was bought in 1974 from Church of the
Province of South Africa
Shelf arrangement: Items are arranged numerically according to the
original classical 19th and early 20th century library classification system
used by Cathedral Libraries in the UK and elsewhere. A thesis has
been written on this specific library classification system

Provenance: This collection dates from 1990. Items are bought and
identified by the Personal Librarians and Collection Developers as
being at risk on the Open Shelves. Items are still being added to the
Collection

civilisations)
Provenance: The items were donated by Mr KS Birch in 1994. Items
are still being added to the Collection

recordings)
Provenance: Since 1997 these items have been on permanent loan
from the Department of Information Science’s Children’s Literature
Research Unit. Items are still being added to the Collection

Provenance: Collection was donated in 1999.
Self arrangement: Items are arranged in alphabetical order according

JL Van Schaik Publishers Archives (all publications published by
JL van Schaik Publishers from 1914 onwards)
Provenance: The Publishers’ Archive was transferred to the Library in
2000
Shelf arrangement: Items are arranged alphabetically according to title
as requested by the Donor. The Collection contains a copy of each
impression of every title ever published by the Company. Items are still
being added to
