iCRAG Post-doctoral position HC4.1 PD1
Development of novel sediment tracers: validation and application of conventional
and new provenance proxies.
Earth and Ocean Sciences, National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG), are seeking to
appoint a suitably qualified post-doctoral candidate to carry out research within the
Hydrocarbons Spoke of the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG).
iCRAG is funded under the SFI Research Centres Programme and is co-funded under
the European Regional Development Fund.
The successful candidate will be based at NUIG and work within the “Sediment Tracking”
targeted project, which also includes academics and researchers from UCD, TCD and UCC,
and is linked with the National Centre for Isotope Geochemistry (NCIG).
The overall aim of this targeted project is to help move toward first-order quantitative
modelling of sedimentary systems and their detrital products. This post-doctoral research
project aims to achieve this through the development and rigorous testing of integrated,
multi-proxy provenance approaches. This will allow a wider range of trace and major
components of sands/sandstones to be tracked and should ultimately lead toward improved
prediction of both reservoir sandstone distribution and quality. We are particularly interested
in recruiting a sedimentologist / sedimentary petrologist with research expertise and a
publication record (commensurate with experience) in sedimentary provenance and
geochemical analytical techniques, especially LA-ICPMS. The successful candidate will also
be expected to contribute to the supervision of associated PhD projects, so some experience
in this area would also be an advantage.
Candidates should hold or anticipate a PhD in Geology, Earth Sciences or a related
discipline. The appointment is for 4 years and comes with with a starting salary of c. €34,000
increasing to c. €37,000 by year 4. There are additional funds available to cover
field/conference travel, and analytical costs. For more information please contact Dr Shane
Tyrrell (shane.tyrrell@nuigalway.ie).
Applications, which must including a CV, a covering letter explaining your interest in the
position, and contact details for three referees, should be emailed to
shane.tyrrell@nuigalway.ie by 11pm GMT, Friday 1st May 2015. It is envisaged this project
will start in September 2015, but could commence sooner depending on the availability of
the candidate.
