PhD Plus Fellowship 2010
Further Particulars
Up to 5 Postdoctoral Fellowships starting no later than 1 October 2010 are available at the University of
Leeds for engineers and scientists who wish to establish a career in research.
As the programme offers the first step into a research career, candidates’ PhD theses (viva does not need
to have taken place) should be submitted between 1 October 2009 and 30 September 2010. Candidates
who are studying at other universities are encouraged to apply. Candidates who have been offered or
already have a permanent position are considered to have already achieved the aims of the programme
and therefore will not be eligible. The programme is designed to offer support and be flexible.
Fellowship Details:
 One year’s independent funding
 Based at the University of Leeds
 A fellowship grant of up £15,000 to be used to increase the impact of the PhD
 Training and support offered in developing research and funding application skills
 Optional mentoring scheme and career advice readily available
 Opportunities for overseas conference attendance and fieldwork costs
Examples of how the fellowship grant could be used:
 Time to complete key publications resulting from the PhD research
 Research resources or funding to visit other groups/facilitate knowledge transfer
 Outreach activities
Areas of Research:
 Information and Communications Technology
 Materials, mechanical and medical engineering
 Mathematical sciences
 Process, environment and sustainability
 Physical Sciences
Eligibility:
 Candidates must have submitted their PhD between 1 October 2009 and 30 September 2010
 Candidates must have been in receipt of EPSRC funding during their PhD (fees and/or maintenance) or tied
to a research project grant.
 Candidates studying at another university are encouraged to apply.
Length of Tenure:
Up to one year, to start no later than 1 October 2010*. An earlier start date may be possible with prior arrangement.
Place of Tenure:
The University of Leeds.
Value of the Fellowship:
Salaries will be paid on University Grade 6 (£24,273 - £28,983 p.a.), it is likely that the appointment will be made at
spinal point 28 (£28,139) due to funding limitations. In addition, a fellowship grant of up to £15,000 is available for
each fellowship.
Application Procedure:
 Applicants should specify their plans for the use of funds and discuss their application with the Head of
School/Institute, where the work is to be carried out, prior to submission (see contact details of participating
School/Institutes below). A statement of support from the relevant Head of School/Institute will be required
with all applications.


*Fellowships of less than 12 months may be able to take up tenure at a slightly later date.

2. A detailed CV including full academic history, research and publications to date.

3. Two references (Annex IV), one of which to be from the principal PhD supervisor. The references must be
signed and sent as .pdf documents to pg_scholarships@leeds.ac.uk
Directly from Head of School/Institute:
4. A signed supporting statement (Annex V) from the relevant Head of School/Institute indicating how the
fellowship plans would fit with the School/Institute’s strategy. This statement must be obtained from the Head
of School/Institute as a .pdf document and returned by Head of School/Institute to

Closing date: 31 March 2010. Interviews will be held in May 2010.
