INDUCTION CHECKLIST FOR NEW STAFF This checklist suggests the most important topics that should be covered during the induction process. Heads of College/Departments, or their nominees, are asked to ensure that each new member of staff has been given the relevant information below and advised of appropriate in-house procedures as well as ensuring participation in next available and relevant University Induction in APECS. a) Physical Layout of the Department Tour/explanation of rooms and facilities in the department (Who works where?) A plan of the department would be helpful, with room and telephone numbers). Specifically to be covered: e) Health and Safety What safety rules operate within the department? What are the potential hazards and fire procedures? Ensure the following are identified: Cloakroom/toilet facilities Tea/refreshment facilities Departmental Safety Adviser Laboratories/Teaching Rooms/Secretarial facilities Sound of fire alarm and the routine of sounder testing Location of exits (esp. closest to own work space) and Assembly point Location/list of first aiders and kit University Emergency Telephone number Notice boards Location of other Departments within the School b) Hazard and accident reporting procedure Safety notice boards Safety Training - online Fire Awareness and Display Screen Equipment training can be found here: http://swanseauniversity.hosted.safetylearning.co.uk Other local/specific legislative requirements, e.g.: Personal protective equipment Other Department specific issues e.g. Hygiene, Patient contact etc. People, Organisational Structure and Relationships An organisational plan of the School/Department would be helpful, with details of who reports to whom, and who has responsibility for different aspects of work within the specific department (e.g. teaching, research, secretarial & technical staff,). Also include: Introduction to Head of College and Head of Department Introduction to Immediate Supervisor Introduction to Colleagues Explanation of roles and responsibilities of members of staff Function and structure of the College and Department and how it relates to the rest of the University Supervision structure c) f) Assessment of immediate knowledge and skills required by new staff member and identification of training needs, e.g. knowledge of: working procedures operation of equipment particular work techniques software packages Rules, Procedures and Practices What are College/Departmental policies and practices with regard to assessment, staff meetings, allocation of resources, secretarial work, use of technical staff resources, student records, student attendance, student workloads, etc.?
