A:B1.1 Demonstrate the motivation to achieve individual potential A:B2.6 Understand the relationship between classroom performance and success in school Assessments / Data Source Category 2 – 6 Week Progress Reports and End-of-Term Grade Reports My Student Learning Goal #2 will focus on seniors who receive one or more failing grades at the close of the first 6 weeks of the second Trimester. Context/Students As of ((DATE)), there are ((##)) seniors enrolled at ((SCHOOL/PROGRAM)). Approximately 22% are white, 5% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, 62% Hispanic, 2% American Indian/Alaskan Native, and 2% African American. Approximately 70% of students qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch. Approximately 17% of these students are eligible for Special Education Services; 15% are designated as ELL; 7% are considered Homeless. Data from 2011-12 school year, indicated that only 8% of students who received a failing grade at the 6 week progress report, were able to change their grade to passing by the end of the trimester. With the implementations of tracking and monitoring systems, 2012-13 data shows an increase in this rate, as 36% of the students were able to change their failing grades at 6 weeks progress to passing grades at the end of the trimester. Baseline Data The student population at the ((SCHOOL/PROGRAM)) have unique challenges, such as medical leave from school, childcare complications, unstable relationships, domestic violence and poverty to name a few. Circumstances such as these can make it more difficult for our students to juggle home, family and school demands. Baseline data will be collected during the first 6 weeks of 2nd trimester of the 2015/2016 school year. By the end of the 2nd Trimester of the 2014-2015 school year, 100% of senior students identified as having received 1 or more failing grades in the baseline data will increase their number of passing grades by at least one on their final 2nd Trimester report card. For students to graduate and obtain their high school diploma, it is essential that they understand that it takes persistence and hard work, especially when they find themselves behind. Many of these students are still learning these skills, which speaks to the importance of providing SAMPLE GOAL – Revised 09/29/15 strategies and interventions for these struggling students. Weekly Student of Concern (SOC) Meetings SOC meetings are an opportunity for staff members to discuss student concerns in a confidential professional setting. This collaborative process allows staff a time to brainstorm ideas/strategies to help students improve their failing grades. Strategies Professional Learning and Support Individual Student Planning/Contracts Meetings between student, teachers and/or counselor to create an action plan to help improve failing grades. Skill Development Opportunities Teaching students life skills that are necessary for their success. Specifically, life skills that will help to improve failing grades (self-advocacy, prioritization, responsibility, communication, organization). Attending monthly job alike meetings. These meetings offer time to collaborate with counselors in other buildings and discuss strategies/ideas for helping students recover failing grades.
