Curriculum Vitae of Dr Daniel Thorniley A) Present position: Senior Vice President, Economist Group, Vienna, since autumn 1986. Senior Consultant on global corporate business trends, with specialisation in USA, Europe, East-Central Europe, Russia and Mid-East & Africa and emerging markets. Manager of the Economist Group Vienna office (staff of 20) providing client, consulting, advisory and research services to international business companies. Manager of 250-company client groups, the East European Group and Middle East and Africa Group Companies include AIG, Akzo Nobel, Citibank, Bank Austria, Coca Cola, Dow Chemical, EBRD, Eli Lilly, Ernst & Young, Exxon, Ford, Glaxo Smithkline, IBM, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, Philips, Unilever. In this post he makes regular briefings (duration between one hour and two days) to client companies at HQs in Europe, Middle East and North America on the business environment, corporate case studies, market entry and development, banking, financing, politics and economic situation. Through 1988-2006 two to three business presentations per month to Western companies often at The Economist boardroom, London or the Williams Club, New York. This is usually a grouping of 15-50 client companies. These meetings also take place in Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna and Moscow. 1 of 4 In addition to in-house briefings, work involves report writing and telephone consultation on business, financial, economic and political situation on global business trends, international affairs, investment strategies and business trends in East-Central Europe and Russia. On average he has 15-20 company contacts per week. A recent report writing was a 80-page document for Nomura of Japan on borrowing, bond policy and investment. During the 1998 Russian devaluation crisis he wrote five analytical documents for his clients. He continues to send his clients 8-9 analytical business papers each year looking at global market trends, European business trends and analysis on the CEE, CIS, Mid-east and African regions. The CEO of Heineken has commented that his papers are “unique” in the business world for their accuracy and frankness. He is also the Economist Group’s principal chairman and speaker at conferences and Government Roundtables and invited guest speaker: these number 6-8 per annum in Western Europe, East Central Europe and the Middle East and Africa with audiences of 50-250 participants.
