Movie Clip Review Activity (approx. total time 50 minutes) Purpose: (1) To make connections between observed interpersonal behavior in movie clips and terms/concepts from the text. (2) To preview some of the problems and challenges associated with group work. (3) To continue skill building to overcome debilitative stage fright. Instruction: Divide the class into two groups. If possible, keep existing class groups intact. (i.e. Groups A, B, and C become the RED group; Groups D, E, and F become the BLUE group. Time: Forty minutes activity Note: Movie clip viewing was conducted at the prior class meeting, with instructions to view the clip and write down any and all terms and concepts observed that we have learned so far. Allow three minutes for instructions Allow twelve minutes for each group to select three “team” movies, use textbook and notes to choose terms and concepts, and organize their strategy for who will present in what order (it is deliberately not enough time) Allow 35 minutes for them to present terms/concepts You will need: Videos to preview the prior class period Two whiteboard markers, one red and one blue Game rules (Powerpoint) Group Directions: Give the game rules to the groups. Allow teams to use notes, text and each other to apply terms/concepts to movie clips Write the phrasing format on the board: A ____________ (term or concept) that is important in the study of __________( Chapter) is ______________________. The term or concept means: ________________________. We saw an example of this in the film clip: ______________ where __________________________ (describe what you saw). Make six columns on the whiteboard and label them by movie title, and two “other movie” categories (one for the BLUE team and one for the RED team). Demonstrate the phrasing for students. Ask all students to stand at the front of the room, while you move to the back of the room in a chair. Choose a team to begin ROUND ONE. After the student has spoken the term and given an example of the film clip, the team scribe writes the term under the movie heading. After the student presents, they are invited to sit down. Between students, instigate a class-wide one clap acknowledgement. Alternate until all students present. ROUND TWO begins again with all students in the front. No repetition of terms or concepts is allowed! This forces students to cooperate more with team members to uncover/discover terms that can be applied.
