Discover London’s Architecture on foot.
A comprehensive programme of over 90 architectural walks provides an unrivalled way to explore
the London’s buildings, spaces and places. The walks form part of this year’s London Festival of
Architecture which celebrates the new and the old architecture of the capital.
Festival visitors can also venture behind the scenes of some famous London institutions such as
the British Library, the Wellcome Collection and RADA, all of which will be throwing open their
doors to offer a special insight into how they work.
Walks include:
Kensington, Chelsea & Knightsbridge

Start: Sloane Square underground station
Beginning with Howarth Tompkin’s reconstruction of the Royal Court Theatre and John McAslan &
Partners revitalisation of the, Peter Jones store, the walk continues to the South Kensington
Museums and Norman Shaw’s Royal Geographic Society building with a short walk through Hyde
Park to Gustafson Porter’s elegant Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain.
Canary Wharf Tours
Thu 26, Fri 27, Mon 30 June & Tue 1 July @ 6.30pm, Sat 28, Sun 29 @ 11am & 2pm
Start: Canary Wharf underground station
Be guided round the high-rise offices, open spaces and public art on the Canary Wharf Estate
including Foster & Partners’ splendid Underground station Jubilee Park by Jacques & Peter Wirtz,
and One Canada Square by Cesar Pelli.
Stratford Tours
Sat 28, Sun 29 June @ 11am & 2pm
Start: Meridian Square Clock, Stratford
Look at the area’s heritage in the form of Joseph Bazalgette’s Abbey Mills Pumping Station and its
future in the form of the Stratford City development, the Olympic site and. the lasting legacy of the
Games in the form of a new park for the East End on a similar scale to Hyde Park.
King's Cross & Bloomsbury Tours
Thu 3, Mon 7 July @ 6.30pm, Sat 5, Sun 6 July @ 11am & 2pm
Start: St Pancras International station
Starting at the recently revamped St Pancras International, the walk looks at the planned
regeneration of Kings Cross, Foster & Partners’ magnificent Great Court at the British Museum, a
summer pavilion at the Architectural Association in Bedford Square ,Patrick Hodgkinson’s
Brunswick Centre and concludes at the New London Architecture centre (NLA).

Starting at the new Southwark Underground station the tour will look at the South Bank's iconic
buildings as well as some of the area’s lesser-known architectural treasures and explore some of
the recent changes that have taken place around Tate Modern.

Start: Borough underground station
The walk will look at the variety of new architectural work taking place near London Bridge. This
walk will look at new housing, Guy’s Hospital, the More London development and London’s latest
park - Potters Fields, designed by Gross Max with pavilions by DHDSA
City of London Tour 1
Wed 16, Thu 17, Fri 18 July @ 6.30pm, Sat 19, Sun 20 July @ 11am & 2pm
Start: City Information Centre
This walk commences at the new City Information Centre designed by Make and concentrates on
the heart of the City, where there is a range of buildings designed for the World’s financial capital
by Fletcher Priest, Foster & Partners, Grimshaw and Parry and two under construction by Jean
Nouvel.
City of London Tour 2
Wed 16, Thu 17, Fri 18 July @ 6.30, Sat 19 & Sun 20 July @ 11am & 2pm
Start: Liverpool Street station balcony
This walk looks at developments on the East of the Square Mile. including Foster’s 30 St Mary Axe
(a.k.a. The Gherkin) and buildings by Arup, Grimshaw, McAslan, Rogers Stirk Harbour, Wilkinson
Eyre and SOM, which are transforming this eastern part of the City.

London Festival of Architecture 2008 will be one of the world’s major celebrations of architecture and the built
environment. London’s landscape will be transformed during the spectacular month-long festival, which will include
over 500 events for visitors as well as architecture professionals. Organised in association with Design for London,
events including exhibitions, architect-designed pavilions, film-screenings will take place at national cultural institutions
like the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, high profile outdoor public spaces, and places of
architectural interest across the capital.
In association with the British Council, LFA2008 will also include an international Embassies Project to link this
celebration of London’s architectural activity with that from over twenty countries around the world, and a National
Architecture Student Festival where temporary structures will spring up across the city, offering shelter and
demonstrating how unused spaces can be transformed.

London Festival of Architecture Hubs
Five Festival Hubs across the capital will be defined areas of concentrated activity where events will take place, where
people will congregate and where the buzz of major events will be evident. They are:

Kensington, Chelsea & Knightsbridge Hub – focusing on museums and galleries in South Kensington, and on
the proposed ‘shared space’ public realm scheme in Exhibition Road by Dixon Jones.

Canary Wharf, Stratford & Greenwich Peninsula Hub – debates on the future of East London in light of
planned major development, a major lecture by a world renowned architect, and open air events exploring the
area’s docklands and rivers.

King’s Cross, Bloomsbury, Fitzrovia & Covent Garden Hub – exploring the new masterplan for Bloomsbury, a
network of public spaces between the British Museum and the new St Pancras International terminal and talks at
New London Architecture.

Southwark & South Bank Hub - including evening events on the Riverside Walk and exhibitions and talks in
cultural venues including the Design Museum and an installation by French architectural collective EXYZT.

Clerkenwell & City of London Hub – including events exploring high-tech sustainable architecture and the
future of work places, installations in Paternoster Square, Smithfield Market, Clerkenwell Green, and a ‘medieval
market’ on Cheapside, London’s first high street.
