Press Release Construction site tires from Continental: Substantially improved performance features Hanover / La Bobadilla, April 2007. Designed for existing and expanding markets, Continental's new generation of construction tire lines for heavy-duty vehicles display substantially improved performance potential. After an extensive facelift in 2005, Hanover-based Continental is rolling out a further evolutionary stage this year - the new HSC1, HDC1 and HTC1 tires have outstanding performance features and their new tread pattern design makes them instantly recognisable from their predecessors. Continental splits the commercial vehicle tire market into three sectors - passenger transport, goods transport and construction site applications. An analysis of the commercial vehicle market reveals that around 75% of commercial vehicles are used in goods transport and some 15% in passenger transport. A good 10% of commercial vehicles are found on construction sites. The figures for these vehicles make impressive reading - every year they transport over 70,000 times the weight of the Empire State Building, covering a distance of approximately 750 billion kilometres in the process. The applications of these vehicles can be sub-divided into various categories both on and off the road. For vehicles driven predominantly on the road, the HSR1 and HDR+ are the ideal answer, whilst the HSO and HDO are designed for exclusively off-road use. And the new Construction tires HSC1, HDC1 and HTC1 fit in perfectly between these two applications. Their special features include outstanding traction, excellent resistance to damage and very good driving characteristics on a wide range of surfaces. This new generation of tires offers quiet running, safe driving features both on and off the road, plus a high load-carrying capacity - and all this at exceptionally low operating costs. In addition to major differences in their applications, whether on or off the road, specific factors also play a role. These include climate, topography, and the condition of the roads. Last but not least, the various vehicle concepts, axle configurations, maintenance level and type of tire arrangement - either single or twin - have an effect on usage. What must also be taken into account in tire development is that very different conditions prevail in the markets around the world. Other aspects which play a role include, for example: How are the tires fitted and maintained? What speeds are they driven at and at what tire pressure? How often is the payload exceeded and by how much? To meet the different market demands, Continental has involved users in its product development. The new construction site tires, which were tested under extreme conditions, constitute a product group that meets customer requirements 100 per cent: "The new site tires constitute top level products" said a delighted Dr. Michael Korpiun, Head of Marketing Truck Tires Europe at Continental AG: "This new generation of tires meets all customer demands, from excellent off-road characteristics on a range of different terrains and for all weather conditions, to very noticeable damage resistance."
