How hot is “hot”?

Environments, Health and Social Education

2 months

Teacher: Martina Michaličková

The feeling of temperature – is water warm or cold?

°C, °F

Absolute zero, freezing point, boiling point, change of freezing and boiling point in different conditions

Types of thermometer – mercury, alcohol, bimetallic, liquid crystals, digital

Right way of measurement of temperature

Are you ill?

Cold-blooded and warm-blooded animals, temperature records

Thermal expansions of solids, liquids and gases + practical use

Bimetallic strip + its use

Thermostat + thermostat in human body

Constant temperature + where do we need it

- safe work with hot things

- correct way of measurement of temperature

- be aware of the fragile temperature balance in the world

- discuss and understand that not all materials and objects are able to live in different temperatures

- discuss the difference in thermoregulation between warm – blooded and cold – blooded animals

- describe and explain how thermal expansion of solids, liquids and gases is used in technology, architecture, ……….

- present scientific information in format of lab reports - measurement of temperature of water in time

- formulate simple hypothesis, collect and record data of temperature into table, draw graph + interpret data + analyze possible mistakes, write short conclusion

- identify the mistake of measurement using different types of thermometers with different scales

- take data from longer term (during 1 week) measurement of temperature

- be aware of the importance of fever for us + what it means + how to heal it

- ask questions for interview

- making own thermometer

- work with models of thermometers, reading of temperature + finding a mistake of measurement

- observing the behaviour of yeast in different temperature conditions

- measurement of temperature of water in time- formulate simple hypothesis, collect and record data into table, draw graph + interpret data, analyze possible patterns + analyze possible mistakes

- writing short conclusion

- long term measurement – how the daily temperature varies in 2 weeks

- worksheet – measurement of temperature – find and reject information from text – note taking

- creative writing – story from time of different clocks, traveling in time

- interview with grandparents - What did the winter in their childhood look like?

- making and observing experiments + giving predictions – change of freezing point of water by adding of salt, bigger balloon with putting more air there, is it possible to prolong a wire?

- discussion about life in temperature extremes, temperature adaptation, siesta, …

- discussion - How different temperature affect our body?

-essay writing – use of thermal expansion of solids, liquids and gases pair work work with different types of sources find information reading comprehension reading graphs and analysis of data interview essay writing paragraphing and note taking lab report writing

One world essay - How do temperature changes affect our life or life on Earth ? – A, B

Worksheet – B

Lab report – Measurement of temperature of water in time – D, E, F
