What is Matter
• Objects that take up space and have mass
are called matter.
• Everything around you is made up of
matter.
• Candy is made up of matter. ...
• All the material on earth is in three
states-solid, liquid, and gas. ...
Three States of Matter
Solids
•They keep their shape
Liquids •They take the shape of the
container that holds them.
•You can pour them from
one container to another.
•Gravity usually pulls liquid
downward.
Gases •They can float in the air.
•Some gases are invisible.

Water Cycle
One Friday afternoon before
spring break, Ms. Bailey left
her glass of water by the
window in the warm sun. A
week later when she got back
the glass was still there but
the water was gone. What
happened to the water?
One day Ms. Buckingham’s
hands were very cold. She
cupped her hands together and
started blowing on them to get
them warm. She noticed her
hands were becoming damp.
Where did this dampness (water)
come from?
How did the
water get into
her body?
Where did she
get the water
she drank?
Where did that
water come
from?
How did the water
get into the
reservoir, lake or
whatever?
How did the
water get into
the cloud? One
word please.
What are the 3
states of matter?
Solid
Gas
Liquid
