MW 502 Midwifery Anthropology and Cultures of
the World
(3 Credits)
Course Description:
This course will deepen and broaden the student’s grasp of the differences and
similarities in cultures that inform patterns of power and control in maternal child health
care.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion, the student will be able to:
1. Describe the effect of culture on birth practices
2. Identify power discrepancies between clients and their healthcare providers in
different cultures and across social strata
3. Enrich understanding of the social contexts surrounding birth in a variety of
cultures
4. Discuss the diversity of cultural approaches to maternal child healthcare
throughout the world
Course Requirements:
1. Lecture and Reflections:
Peoples and Cultures of the World, Edward Fischer, PhD, Tulane University, teaching at
Vanderbilt University. Listen to all 24 lectures, and as you listen take notes as you go
along and you will have a good start on your academic paper.
2. Reading:
In addition to the lectures, the student is expected to read 1000 pages from the course
bibliography or preceptor approved books. The 1000 pages of reading are to be taken
from the Bibliography below. For each book you read you will list the author, book
name, place of publication, publisher, year, pages read, and one paragraph annotation
describing the book.
3. Academic Paper:
The student will write a 10-12 page research paper with a bibliography. The research for
this paper should come from the lectures and the readings in the bibliography, and any
other sources that shed light on the chosen topic. This paper should not be a personal
reflection, but report on the research that has been done in this area. Focus on a

geographical area of interest, reflecting on the impact the subject has had on your chosen
area. Choose one from the following:
a. Choose a culture and delve in depth into disparities (economic, social, racial,
educational, etc) that affect maternal child health outcomes
b. Choose a people and describe their history, demographics, ethnic composition,
migration pattern and their social, ethical and religious concerns. Focus on
childbearing practices, including changes in trends during pregnancy, birth,
postpartum and breastfeeding.
c. Describe the area where you live in the context of its demographics and how
this affects midwifery practice in your area. What is the social context of
birth and health care? How does the technocratic model of childbirth affect
culture? What is neglected in this modern culture of childbirth?

Was the student clear in the presentation?
Did the student utilize appropriate grammar, spelling, etc, for graduate
work?

paper?
5. Special Project:
Interview a person who gave birth in a culture different from your own and write a 3 to 5
page paper. Describe the prenatal care they experienced, the way birth was handled and
her experience of post partum care and infant feeding. Describe how the interviewee felt
about the care she received. Did she feel it was culturally appropriate to her? Reflect on
her experience in light of this course.
