Course Objectives
1. Students will become proficient in English grammar.
2. Students will become familiar with ways used to present, explain and
practice English grammar in context and in the context of Israeli schools.
3. Students will explore grammar sites on the web for self-enrichment and
extra practice
Topics of Study (Semester 1)
Unit 1 –week 1- What is pedagogic grammar; for and against teaching "rules"
Unit 2- week 2- The sentence and its parts
Unit 3- weeks 3-4- Nouns- functions, plurals, count and non-count, pronouns,
quantifiers, compounds, possessives, subject-verb agreement
Unit 4- weeks 5-9 The tense system: present, past and future tenses, linking
verbs, short forms, irregular verbs, present perfect,
contrast of all tenses, sequence of tenses, common errors
Unit 5 week 10- Verb complements: Infinitives and gerunds
Unit 6 week 11- Modal auxiliaries, semi-modals
Unit 7 week 12- Passive voice
Unit 8 week 13- Questions- types, tags, green words
(Semester 2)
Unit 9 weeks 1-2 Conditional sentences
Unit 10 weeks 3-4 Reported speech
Unit 11 weeks 5-6 Adjectives and adjectival clauses
Unit 12 weeks 7-8 Adverbs and adverbial clauses
Unit 13 weeks 9-10 Inverted forms, subjunctive mood, causative verbs
Unit 14 weeks 11-12 Phrasal verbs, prepositions
Unit 15 week 13 Review
