M.S. Ghuman, Ph.D. (Geotechnical Engineering), Roorkee, Ex. Prof. and Head of Civil Engg., Pb. Engineering College, Chandigarh

COMPANY INTRODUCTION
We have a full fledged laboratory for carrying out soil investigations and testing of various types of construction materials at
SCO No. 64-65 (Basement) Sector 17A Chandigarh since 1992. In addition to this laboratory, we have new laboratory complex at F-81,
Industrial Area, Phase VII Mohali covering an area of 525 sq. yards, well equipped with latest equipments.
Taking into consideration our high standard of laboratory testing, out clients are quite large such as CPWD;
Min. of Env. and Forest, Civil Const. Unit, New Delhi, Air Force, M.E.S.; Northern Railway, Telecommunication
Department, LIC etc. and almost all Govt. organizations/public sectors/corporations/Boards of Punjab, Haryana
and Himachal.
We are also rendering testing services to large number of private multinational projects coming up at
various places in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Jammu, particularly at Baddi, Lalru, Derabassi & near by areas,

Based upon the reliability of our test house in rendering consultancy in the field of Geotechnical Engg and
testing of construction materials the Chief Engineer (NZ-1) CPWD has approved our test house for carrying out
soil investigations as well as testing of Building Materials.
As far as M.E.S. is concerned, necessary approvals have been granted to our laboratory to undertake Geotechnical Investigations
as well as testing of construction materials by Chief Engineer, Chandigarh zone, Bathinda zone, Jalandhar zone and Pathankot zone.
We have also been approved by Chief Engineer Air Force (WAC), Palam, Delhi for carrying out
Geotechnical Investigations and testing of various construction materials. We are also carrying out various
investigation for different projects under GE Air Force Chandigarh, Ambala, Sarsawa, Adampur, Sirsa and
Suratgarh etc.
We have already carried out soil investigations and testing of various construction materials for Towers,
covering near about 100 sites for Spice Telecom, HFCL, Airtel and BSNL. Besides this we are also approved form
Chief Engineer (C), BSNL, Pb. Telecom Circle, Chandigarh.
We are also approved from Chief Engineer, PUDA, Chandigarh. Consequently we have already carried out
geotechnical investigations for large number of works including Houses, Over Head Tanks, Water Treatment
Plants, Water supply schemes & UGSR etc. The Deputy Director, Quality Control, PUDA Mohali is engaging us
to test the construction materials from time to time.

The entire project dealing with investigations such as Geotechnical investigations, Evaluation of Modulus
of Subgrade reaction, CBR and Testing of various types of construction materials for the upcoming Amritsar
Airport, Amritsar has been assigned to our test house by Airport Authority of India.
We as third party, under overall supervision of Er. R.S. Shukla Consultant, and former Head Flexible
Pavements, Central Road Research Institute (C.R.R.I.), New Delhi, have undertaken supervisory work of quality
control testing work inclusive of design of road mixes, for 5 Nos. road projects in Punjab state costing about Rs.
Seventy five crores financed by M.O.R.T.H. for Punjab Infrastructure Development Board (PIDB), besides
providing necessary related laboratory support.
It is for your kind information that we have carried out the Soil investigations for Multiplexes for
M/s Pasco Motors, Silver City, Bajaj Travels and two No. Multiplexes in Amritsar for M/s Splendor Landbase
limited, New Delhi. Besides this we are also carrying out testing of construction materials for above Multiplexes
along with Shalimar Mall and Bella Vista Mall at Panchkula. We have also been allotted the work of soil
investigations and testing of building materials by ANSAL for Sushant City at Bathinda and proposed project at
Mohali.
We are carrying out work for M/s Rohan Rajdeep Tollways Ltd. for Patiala Samana Patran road,
Balachour–Dasuya road Projects. We have also carried out the work of Soil Investigations for Const. of R.O.B.

The survey is done with Total Electronic Station with great accuracy universally accepted.
We will like to mention here the nature of jobs that can be taken by us with help of Er. I.P. Thareja of M/s
S.T. Associates, Computerised land surveys & Structural consultants, Panchkula.

Topography of Roads, Bridges, Towns, Sectors. Each and every feature like Trees, Manholes, Electric
Poles, Buildings etc. encountered during surveying is marked precisely. Before hand planning can be done
which saves lot of time and money during execution.

Fixing of T.B.M. from permanent B.M. with the help of auto levels and Total
Stations.
(iii)
Layout/Demarcation of Sectors, Bridges and Industrial Sheds etc.
(iv)
Marking Alignment of New Routes including setting out Curves, improvement of existing Curves &
Junctions.

Topography of water supply projects, Lengths, Width and Levels at junction of Streets are taken for
designing of pipelines and machines/pumps. Designing of Water Supply and Sever lines is also undertaken

Topography/layout of Hydro-Electric projects where it is very difficult to execute with ordinary
instruments.
Data is collected from site with computerized aided electronic machines and downloaded with the help of
software from where it is transferred to other soft wares like M.S. Excel, Auto-cad and Auto-plotter where final
drawing are prepared. Colored drawings are provided which are very helpful in distinguishing various areas,
especially at change of Levels. Various features are given different shades to distinguish them from each other.
Drawings can be prepared on any scale depending upon the requirements. Drawings can be stored in the form of
CDs (Compact Discs). Modifications in such drawings are very easy at later stage.

GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATIONS
STANDARD PENETRATION TEST
The scope of the work to carry out sub-soil investigation at the proposed locations consists of boring, conducting in-situ tests,
collecting disturbed and undisturbed soil samples from the bore holes, and conducting relevant laboratory tests as specified. The purpose
of the work is to ascertain the sub-soil profile, index and engineering properties of the soils and evaluation of allowable bearing capacity
values for shallow as well as Deep foundations (Piles & Wells etc. etc.) .
The work is carried out conforming to relevant Indian Standards.
The extent of investigation is:i)
To carry out field investigations involving boring/drilling sampling and in-situ tests.
ii)
Conducting Standard Penetration Test (SPT) at suitable intervals.
iii)
Collection of disturbed and undisturbed soil samples and water sample for laboratory
testing.
iv)
Laboratory tests on disturbed/undisturbed soil samples:
a)
Determination of all relevant Index properties eg. Density, moisture content, Specific Gravity,
Void Ratio/Porosity, Grain size analysis (Sieve as well as wet analysis), Atterberg Limits, sensitivity etc.

DYNAMIC CONE PENETRATION TEST (DCPT)
In this test, a standard cone 50 mm in diameter and having an apex angle of 60°, attached to a
string of drill rods is driven directly into the ground under the blows of 65.0 kg hammer falling from a height of 75
cm. The number of blows for 30 cm penetration is termed the penetration resistance and is designated as Ncd.
This test provides the variability of soil profile i.e. it helps to unearth loose/soft pockets of soil if
met at the approach site.
This test has been successfully used to ascertain th ebearin gcapacity of Boulder-Cobbles-GravelSoil matrixes met at site like Baddi, Parwanoo, Nalagarh and all Hilly terrains of H.P.
3.
DRILLING IN BED ROCK
Drilling into fresh/weathered rock strata is carried out using double tube core barrel of NX size and diamond bits with
water or bentonite slurry as drilling fluid run by a hydraulic feed machine. Minimum diameter of cores is 54.0 mm unless otherwise
instructed by the Engineer-in-charge
The time required to drill through a certain depth, amount of core recovery, rock Quality
Designation (RQD), physical condition length of pieces of core, joints, colour water residue, loss of water during
drilling, hydraulic pressure weather evidence of disturbance and other effects are carefully noticed and entered in
the drilling log.
For guidance relevant IS Standards are referred for proper storage of core samples

EARTH RESISTIVITY TEST
The resistivity measurements are taken at five points-four in the corner and one in the center of
the site to represent the entire site. Measurements are taken as per IS :3043-1987 using a high sensitivity digital
resistivity meter employing Wenner’s four-electrode configuration (Fig – 1). The electrodes are spaced equvidistance. Measured D.C. current is passed through the two outer electrodes (current electrodes C1 and C2) and
potential drop across two inner electrodes (potential electrodes P1 and P2) is noted. Two sets of measurements
i.e. in direct and reverse flow of current are taken at each electrode separation. The electrode separation is
increased progressively to obtain resistivity values of deeper layers.
5. PLATE LOAD TEST
Following the procedures as laid down in relevant BIS codes, plate load tests are performed to determine
the following.
i) Evaluation of bearing capacity of soils for shallow foundation.
ii) Evaluation of Dynamic elastic constants for Machine foundations.
iii)
Evaluation of modulus of subgrade reaction for design of Raft foundations and rigid pavements.
6.
ROAD WORK
Geotechnical investigations are carried out for the determination of sub-grade characteristic of the road
samples at subgrade level conforming to IRC-37-2001”Guidelines for the Design of Flexible pavements” . The
