website: http://optn.transplant.hrsa.gov/converge/members/committees.asp.
The OPTN/UNOS Policy Oversight Committee submitted a proposal for public comment that would, with the
exception of MPSC, extend committees with two year terms to three year terms. If public comment is
favorable, the proposal will be submitted to the OPTN/UNOS Board of Directors for review in December 2015.
An implementation date has not been finalized. If approved, the new policy may impact individuals submitting
nominations for the positions listed above.
Responsibilities
Regional representatives represent the region during committee deliberations, provide feedback received at
regional meetings to the committee and present updates on committee activities and public comment
proposals during regional meetings. It is important for the region to have a voice at the committee level to
represent the region’s concerns, issues, and interests.
Committee members are expected to attend all committee meetings, participate on subcommittees and
workgroups, and conference calls as necessary. Committees meet in person 2–3 times a year in Chicago. If
selected as a regional representative, you will also be required to attend regional meetings held twice a year.
UNOS covers all travel expenses to attend committee meetings. UNOS does not cover travel expenses for
regional representatives to attend regional meetings.
How to Submit a Nomination
To submit a self-nomination for a regional representative position click here: Region 9 Biography Form Link.
Please forward the link to anyone who would be interested in serving. Nominations must be received by
October 15, 2015.
Selection Process
Each nomination received will be submitted to the regional councillor and associate councillor who will review
the biography forms and make recommendations to the incoming OPTN/UNOS President.
This selection is based on an individual’s professional experience, their willingness to serve, the needs of the
committee for subject specific expertise, and the individual’s ability to represent the region nationally. The
regional leadership strives to maintain a geographical balance of committee representatives within the region.
The incoming OPTN/UNOS President will make final appointments. We anticipate this process will be
complete by April 2016. All nominees will receive notification regarding the outcome of the selection process.
**Please keep in mind that the Associate Councillor/MPSC representative position will be vacant as of June 30,
2016. A call for nominations will be sent on October 15th and the deadline for submission will be October 30th.
This individual serves a 2-year term as Councillor/Board member after completing the Associate Councillor
term, also 2-years. These positions involve a significant time commitment.
