Ein kurzer Überblick über Oracle Portal.
A fundamental change is occurring in the
software business. For the last decade
software has been delivered on a compact
disc. When problems arise, customers
pick up a phone and contact the vendor’s
support organization, which then seeks to
replicate, diagnose and fix the problem. A
new method for the delivery and
management of software has been in
process for the last few years. This new
paradigm is “software as a service” since
it heralds the convergence of two
previously discrete functions: software
delivery and customer service. A recent
Software and Information Industry
Association (SIIA) survey (2001) showed
that 70% of ISVs are either delivering their
products currently as a service or have
plans to do so. Further, Information Week
concluded in their research (Fall 2001)
that 31% of large and 39% of midsize
companies are likely to use ASP services.
Suffice to say, hosted solutions continue
to gain momentum. The rationale for
software as a service is simple.
Implementing, maintaining, managing and
upgrading software is both a mundane
and extremely expensive task. By
outsourcing the management of their
software, companies can significantly
reduce costs, improve productivity, speed
implementation and achieve a better level
of service. This paper focuses on Oracle
Portal Online, part of a family of
application and technology outsourcing

NOT WITH ORACLE9
IAS PORTAL RELEASE
2
For a portal to be successful, it must be
able to deliver information to its intended
audience in a timely manner. The major
advantage of a portal is its ability to bring
together content and applications from
disparate sources. However, if the Portal,
as a focal point for information access,
adds too much of its own performance
overhead, users will quickly learn to
bypass it. Good performance results from
an architecture that can take full
advantage of available hardware
resources and scale with those resources
to handle increasing user loads.
Oracle9iAS Portal is the only portal
product that meets all the requirements for
scaling performance to handle any size
audience. At the heart of Oracle9iAS
Portal is its inherently scalable and
distributed platform, consisting of the
Oracle9i Application Server (Oracle9iAS)
and Oracle9i Database. That architecture
includes a unique approach to caching
both static and dynamic Web content that
effectively balances the tradeoffs between
good performance and timely, up-to-theminute, personalized access to
information.

ORACLE9 IAS PORTAL
Enterprise information portals (EIP) are
becoming critical to enterprises that are
looking to deploy their operations to the
web. These organizations are using
enterprise portals to give users a single
point of access to a wide range of internal
and external information providers. An EIP
provides access to various data sources
as well as enterprise applications including
business intelligence systems over the
web. The benefits of accessing business
intelligence systems in an EIP include
centralized knowledge management,
increased productivity, better
communication, and higher quality

hochproduktiven RAD (Rapid Application Development) Bereich.

INTEGRATE YOUR EBUSINESS WITH
ORACLE 9IAS
Integration is a critical requirement for EBusiness. As organizations move to fully
capitalize on Internet enabled applications
such as dynamic supply chains, customer
relationship management, and emerging
web services opportunities, they must first
integrate enterprise applications and
business processes in order to participate
in the new connected environment.
Achieving this integration can be very
challenging. There are often many
different applications using different
technologies and architectures. Many of
these systems are constantly evolving,
thus complicating implementation and
maintenance of the integration solution.
Managing this complexity is difficult and
can be very expensive. Worst of all the
cost and schedules are often difficult if not
impossible to predict without the
appropriate process and tools. Oracle9iAS
is a complete e-business infrastructure
software suite that addresses the
challenges of designing, deploying, and
managing e-business applications
including enterprise integration solutions.
Oracle9iAS Integration is the component
of Oracle9iAS that provides a full-featured

solution for enterprise applications
integration, businessto-business
integration, and web services integration.
Oracle9iAS Integration provides a
powerful business process-driven solution
that enables organizations to implement a
systematic and scalable infrastructure for
integrating virtually any packaged or
legacy applications. For Oracle Ebusiness
Suite and Exchange customers, it
provides the ability to quickly and easily
link to 3rd party packaged applications
such as SAP and PeopleSoft. Finally,
Oracle9iAS Integration is a key enabling
technology that supports Oracle’s
comprehensive web services strategy. It
enables virtually any application or
business process to function as web
services. It allows integration of web
services into existing applications and
business processes. This capability also
enables Oracle applications and Oracle
Online Services customers to fully
capitalize on emerging web services
opportunities.

Oracle9iAS InterConnect
Oracle9iAS InterConnect is a
comprehensive application integration
framework that enables seamless
integration of enterprise software. It is built
on top of Oracle’s robust integration
platform and leverages it’s underlying
services. It is designed to integrate
heterogeneous systems, be it Oracle
Applications, non-Oracle applications, or
3rd party messaging oriented middleware
(MOM). This integration can be deployed
either within an enterprise or across
enterprise boundaries through the
Internet. The technical design goals for
Oracle9iAS InterConnect are as follows:
1. Elevate the integration problem from a
technical coding exercise to a functional
modeling exercise thereby reducing
(eliminating, in the best case) the
programming effort normally associated
with integration.
2. Develop and expose an integration
methodology that promotes reuse and
reduces the complexity and management
issues that arise over the software
lifecycle.

The J2EE-based implementation fully
leverages the infrastructure of Oracle9iAS
to deliver enterprise-strength
performance, scalability, and
manageability. Oracle9iAS Integration is a
strong general-purpose integration
solution. Further, tight integration with
Oracle E-Business Suite makes it the best
solution for integrating Oracle applications
with 3rd party packaged applications, B2B
protocol standards, and web services.

Oracle9i High Availability
Overview
Databases and the Internet have enabled
worldwide collaboration and information
sharing, by extending the reach of
database applications throughout
organizations and communities. This
reach further highlights the importance of
high availability in data management
solutions. Small businesses and global
enterprises alike have users all over the
world requiring access to data 24-hours
per day. Without this data access,
operations can stop, and revenue is lost.
Users, who have become more
dependent upon their solutions, now
demand service-level agreements from
their Information Technology (IT)
departments and solutions providers.
Increasingly, availability is measured in
dollars, marks, yen and pounds, not just in
time and convenience.
link
Recognizing these demands, Oracle has
made extending its industry-leading
database availability and reliability one of
Oracle9i's primary goals. Oracle9i
contains a significant number of
enhancements and new features,
designed to provide highly-available
database solutions. These improvements
go beyond making the Oracle database
server more reliable. They enhance
recovery from unplanned outages, allow
planned database maintenance while the
database is in production and available to

users, improve system manageability and
serviceability, and provide enterprise-class

features improve an IT department's
ability to support users and meet servicelevel objectives. Most importantly, since
Oracle9i runs everywhere, highly available
solutions can be implemented within
workgroups, departments, and data
centers, as well as the largest worldwide
enterprises.

Clustering makes several independent
systems appear like one. Together, the
clustered system is more scalable than an
individual system. The clustered system
masks the failure of a member – and hence
is more available. This paper first establishes
the salient characteristics to look for in any
clustered system. It then discusses how
several systems running 9iAS Release 2 can
be clustered together for better scalability,
availability, and manageability.

High Availability (HA) is becoming a musthave requirement for e-businesses that
cannot afford system down time. The Internet
makes it easier to reach customers around
the world and around the clock. Since
companies must always be prepared to serve
their customers, this expanded reach also
makes it more costly when service is not
available, either planned or unplanned.
Oracle Real Application Clusters are the
multi-node extension to Oracle database
server. They enable e-businesses to build a
multi-node database server that are highly
available and highly scalable. An e-business
does not need to sacrifice scalability or
performance for high availability with
clustered database.
