Description of Lesson

Teacher can show the “Economics of Land Transport in Singapore”
video at one of the lessons as a prelude to the visit to create better
awareness.

Teachers to help group the students and assign debate topics, so as to
save time on logistics.

Teacher can customize their worksheets accordingly to the students’
needs and make a copy for the facilitator.

Introduction

Facilitator welcomes the class and distributes the students pack
containing a few souvenirs and worksheets.

Facilitator assigns groups respectively for ice-breakers.

Facilitator briefly points out the role of Land Transport Authority.
Facilitator paints various scenarios to get them to put on their thinking
cap.

Facilitator highlights that the scenes in the gallery will showcase the
challenges faced and strategies employed during the different eras
leading to the development of a People-Centered land transport system
in Singapore.

Facilitator briefly states some economic topics to be discussed. E.g.
different market structures for different modes of transport, supply and
demand, cause of the market failure, negative externalities, scarcity
etc.

Facilitator points out that we will study the merits of LTA’s strategic
thrusts and discuss the policies and its rationale.

Journeys

Facilitator brings them through the global land transport scenes and
highlights that every economy depends heavily on an efficient land
transport system for growth and development.

Facilitator points at the light boxes highlighting the different modes of
transport operating under different market structures.
Memories (Pre-1965)

Facilitator brings them to pre 1965 transport landscape introducing
pirate taxis, the mosquito bus and the Benz cars etc. Students will then
be free to experience the exhibits to further understand the various
transport challenges people faced. The teacher and the facilitator will
involve the students to discuss about the negative externalities and the
cause of market failure.

Today (3 Strategic Thrusts)

Public Transport Section i.e. study the merits of these Strategic Thrust,
“Making Public Transport a Choice Mode” such as having integrated
transport hub, expanding rail network, bus enhancement services or
leveraging on technology to have an efficient transport system.

Meeting Diverse Needs Section i.e. discuss the different needs of road
users, pedestrians, public transport commuters, the mobilitychallenged, the elderly, the elderly and the environment. Or even those
who aspire to own a vehicle, “are we able to cater to everybody’s
needs, while keeping in mind that land space is scarce in Singapore?”

After much has been said about Economics of Land Transport,
students will understand the complexities and trade-offs in the
transport planning for Singapore.
Students to understand the possible future landscape.
Discussion Area

An interactive session with the students is held with the facilitator
and the teacher to discuss about the study of the Economics in Land
Transport and clear the students’ doubts, if any.
