PIEDMONT ADULT SCHOOL Course: 201522 - Painting Instructor: Laura Siegel Materials List Paint You can EITHER buy acrylic paints, acrylic based mediums, etc. OR you can buy oil paints, oil based solvents, etc. for this class. Do not buy both acrylic and oil paints. Select one kind of paint, and buy appropriate mediums, solvents, brushes, etc. for paint. When indicated, 1st choice is my preferred choice. Buy the best quality paint (artist’s quality rather than student grade) that you can afford and, if possible, buy all tubes in the same brand. Pigments Buy one tube of each color. Follow instructions above when buying paint. Blue - ultramarine blue (1st), cerulean blue, cobalt blue Yellow - cadmium yellow light (1st) or hansa yellow light, cadmium yellow medium Red - napthol crimson (acrylic - 1st), alizarin crimson (oil - 1st), cadmium red medium or Cadium red deep Orange - cadmium orange (1st) Violet or purple - dioxazine purple - buy a tube of deep purple Green - viridian OR pthalocynanine green (1st choice) Brown - burnt umber (1st), burnt sienna (2nd choice) Black - ivory OR mars black White - titanium white, buy a large tube of this color Photos Bring in photos you have taken, drawings that you have done to use for ideas for paintings. Palette White plastic palette with many wells for acrylic paint or paper or wood palette with thumb hole for oil paint Brushes Pick several brushes of different shapes and sizes from approx. ¼”- ¾” wide. For bristle width (i.e. a small, a medium and a large brush) - acrylic or watercolor brushes for acrylic paint; oil brushes (hog hair) for oil paints. The smallest brush that you buy should be a “round”. Supports Acrylic painting - Pre-stretched canvas at least 18” x 24” OR heavyweight watercolor paper and a stapler or brown butcher tape and a smooth wooden board for support that is at least 19” x 26” Oil painting - a primed pre-stretched canvas at least 18” x 24” or larger OR a canvasboard at least 18” x 24” OR some 10 oz. UNPRIMED duck cotton canvas and staples and a staple gun, wooden support pieces (stretcher bars) at least 18” x 24” and a jar of gesso, and 2” cheap house painting brush Solvents and Mediums- Acrylic- small jars of matt or gloss medium, gel medium oilturpenoid and turpentine, small jars of damar varnish and linseed oil Small Jars - You will need clean small jars with caps to take solvents home, i.e. similar to baby jars Drawing supplies - 2B-6B graphite pencils, kneaded eraser, paper Box to keep all paints and small supplies, rags for painting, smock to protect clothes
