In addition to this form, your faculty application includes a resume, an essay, and references, which are each described further down in this document. Yes No Yes No The Alberta SW Diploma route is available to Social Work diploma graduates of Alberta colleges and universities with which the Faculty of Social Work has a transfer agreement. Students must have completed a minimum of eight university transferable non-social work courses. The University Transfer route is available to students who have completed a minimum of 20 university transferable half-course equivalents (3 credits each), 19 of which are non-social work courses plus SOWK 201 or its equivalent. Students with a non-social work degree, a non-social work diploma, or a social work diploma from another province are considered University Transfer applicants as well. All University Transfer students, with the exception of applicants with a social work diploma from another province, must complete SOWK 201 or its equivalent preceding the Fall term for which entry is sought. All students must complete an approved social work practicum as part of their BSW degree. The practicum represents a significant time commitment and students are expected to plan accordingly. Please consult the appropriate website for detailed admission and practicum requirements. Transcripts from most Alberta post-secondary institutions will be requested on your behalf by the Admissions Office as per the agreement with Apply Alberta. In addition to the resume, provide a separate sheet that identifies which of your volunteer and/or employment experiences were related to the social services. Please indicate the approximate number of hours you spent in each volunteer/employment experience. If you hold a previous diploma or degree that included practica or internships, please list these separately from paid and volunteer employment. ESSAY Please submit a two-part essay, approximately 5 double-spaced pages in total length. In part one of your essay (approximately 2 pages in length), describe your reasons for applying to the BSW program. This should be a personal essay about you, written in the first person. In part two of your essay (approximately 3 pages in length), identify and discuss a current social problem. Note that this part of your essay should follow proper academic format, including the use of references (e.g., APA). The essay will be evaluated for clarity, content, and writing ability. Online BSW Virtual Learning Circle Applicants ONLY: In addition to the above essay, please include an additional one to two pages commenting on: 1) how the virtual site would meet your learning needs; and 2) your skill level, access to, and knowledge of computer technology. REFERENCES Use the Reference Form, posted on the FSW website, to obtain two references. One of these should be from an academic source (e.g., previous instructor from a post-secondary institution). The other should be from someone who is qualified to comment on your suitability for undergraduate studies in social work (e.g., employment supervisors, practicum supervisors, professionals, elders, etc.). APPLICATION DEADLINES AND TIMELINES Submit the University of Calgary online application or the Change of Program request (whichever is applicable) as soon as possible. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit the Faculty of Social Work application package as early as possible. If you are currently in a post-secondary program outside of Alberta, please include a current transcript showing your final Fall grades and arrange to have your final transcript with Winter grades sent to Admissions at the University of Calgary as soon as possible. February 1: Deadline for current University of Calgary students to submit Change of Program through their Student Centre. March 1: Deadline for the University of Calgary online application and Faculty of Social Work application (form, essay, resume, references). March 31: Deadline for receipt of final transcripts for international students (residing outside of Canada or the US). Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Applicants compete for admission based on the criteria described in the University of Calgary Calendar. NOTES The formal deadline for transcripts is March 31 for international students and June 1 for domestic students. The Faculty of Social Work strongly encourages applicants to submit their transcripts as early as possible. Admissions decisions will be made on files as soon as they are complete with transcripts. Applicants, whose transcripts are not submitted until June, may not be notified of an admission outcome until mid-August. Late transcripts will not be accepted. The information submitted for application to the Faculty of Social Work is collected under the authority of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Federal Statistics Act. All material submitted in support of any application is the property of the Faculty of Social Work and will not be returned to the applicant.
