Essential Question: What is the purpose of applying grammar and mechanics skills? I can statement: I can correctly change a noun to a plural noun. Standard/Lesson Day 1 Reading Skill: Introduce Weekly Spelling Words Have students spell weekly spelling words with pasta letters. Color coded words - vowels are red, consonants are blue Day 2: Whole Class Activity Reading Skill: Introduce Weekly Grammar Skill 1. Give Students weekly grammar rules to put in journal on left side of page. Rules for irregular nouns. If the word ends in –fe: change the –f to a v and add –s If the word ends in –f : change the –f to a v and add-es If the word ends in –o: add –es If the word ends in –us: change the –us to an –i If the word ends in –is: change –is to –es If the word ends in –on: change –on to –a Some nouns change their spelling to name more than one. Mouse - mice man-men Unchanging nouns: Sheep Deer Fish (sometimes) 2. Under the rules, have them write an example of each. Day 3: Activity Reading Skill : Have students complete the practice sheet. Students may need to use their journal rules to help them. Check as a class and go over possible answers. Have them paste the practice sheet on the right side of journal.
