Reading, Grammar, and Vocabulary Skills for Week of 9/28-10/2 Reading Skill: This week, we will focus on prefixes, suffixes, root words, abstract nouns, and expository writing. There won’t be a reading skill this week. Grammar Skill: Abstract and Concrete Nouns A concrete noun can be observed by using one of your 5 senses. You can see it, feel it, touch it, hear it, or taste it. An abstract noun is something you cannot see or touch. It is something that exists only by feeling or emotion. You know that it exists, but you cannot give it a description or bodily appearance. Examples: Abstract childhood friendship kindness humor bravery freedom Concrete cat friend pencil computer fire fighter Statue of Liberty Vocabulary Words: You need to study the definitions of these words. **This week, students will have a vocabulary packet to complete by Friday. The vocabulary words and definitions are included in this packet. Vocabulary Strategy: Root Words *also review prefixes and suffixes A root word is a word that does not have a prefix or suffix. A root word has a meaning. When you learn about root words, this helps you build your vocabulary knowledge and understand more complex words. **Please see “Common Latin Roots” handout
