My perspectives are as follows. To begin with, invariably, a mother who supports and accompanies us not only plays a significant role in everyone’s stages of life but also is one of the equivalent things that the Almighty gives to humans. Without mother, we are just like deadwood in blizzard. Accordingly, in addition to needing someone to deal with chores and take care of children, I assume it’s one of the reasons why Jacob Witting, the guardian of Anna and Caleb put an advertisement on newspaper for seeking “help” after his wife’s demise. Secondly, I admire Anna for her personalities. First of all, she absolutely abominated Caleb because her mother kicked the bucket after this “homely and plain” boy with “a horrid smell” given birth. As a result, "Isn't he beautiful, Anna?"the last words her mother said to her seemed to be ironic. As to me, I might not be capable of being that magnanimous like her and just let bygones be bygones. On top of that, she had to adjust her mentality for an unknown comer. I believe that she was anticipating but afraid of being hurt. In our lives, there must be some exceeding changes we have to face; nonetheless, how to tackle it and think optimistically is what we should learn. Ultimately, Caleb’s and Anna put their projection with regard to their deceased mother on Sarah Wheaton. No sooner Caleb and Anna had learned that Sarah was coming than they said “Ask her if she sings”. Although none can replace the position of their mother, they still yearned for one. It was exactly why they were extremely afraid that Sarah would go to town by herself and opposed it on the grounds that they were anxious about her leaving. "We thought you might be leaving us, because you miss the sea.” These words revealed the sister and brother’s anxiety. To their mollification, considerate as Sarah, she just went to town, purchasing packages, color pencils and nasturtium seeds and so forth. "I will always miss my old home, but the truth of it is I would miss you more."Sarah replied. I believe that these words really touched and pacify the two kids. Last but not least, Sarah, who was sober and warmed Anna and Caleb was encouraged by Maggie, who had a similar experience. Maggie said “There are always things to miss, no matter where you are.”While being at an unfamiliar place, we are dying for others’ cares and sympathies, of course. Leaving for a strange place, going to get along with those who you are not acquainted with is substantially difficult and agonizing. This fortitudinous characteristic is also what we can learn from this book. As for the ending of this story, Patricia MacLachlan, the author left us spaces to utilize our imagination. As a consequence, just let us indulge in the words and lines! 角色 Character 形容詞 Adjective Sarah Wheaton considerate 單字 Word 出現頁數 Page feisty 10 pesky 16 pungent 61 eerie 62 scuttle 69 句子 Sentence 頁數 Page "There are always things to miss"said Maggie.
