Medieval Google Earth
Purpose: To gain an understanding of feudal society by examining a monarch's
kingdom, a lord's fief and manor, and daily life on a manor.
Scenario: You are a lord in European feudal society. You have been given a fief within the
monarch's kingdom in return for your loyalty. On that fief is your manor. You are going to
design multiple maps from Google Earth to show: the location of your fief within the
monarch's kingdom, what your manor looks like, and what it is like to live on your manor.
Map Requirements:
1) Zoom out and create a map of the monarch's kingdom from Google Earth. You should show the
following on your map of the kingdom:
a. Fiefs with your own Coat of Arms showing the land you were given for your loyalty to the
king
b. Forests
c. Rivers
d. Lakes
e. Fertile Fields
f. Fallow Fields
g. Roads
2) Zoom in half way and show a map of the manor. You should show the following on your map of the
manor:
a. Manor House
b. Barn
c. Mill
d. Forests
e. Water Source
f. Church
g. Village
h. Roads
i. Pasture Field
j. Spring Field
k. Autumn Field
l. Fallow Field
m. Waste Disposal Area
n. Key Showing the Lord’s Fields and the Peasants’ fields
3) Zoom in all the way and show a scene from daily life on the manor. Possible ideas include:
a. Trade and Commerce in the Village
b. Guilds in the Village
c. Home Life in the Village or Manor House
d. Crime and Punishment
e. Leisure and Entertainment
f. Farming
