Junior Physical Education Leadership Honors Program
2011-2012
The Junior/Senior Leaders program is a two year commitment failure to
complete a program either year may result in loss of honors credit, review of
athletic waiver or SPUR ramifications.
Requirement: A student contract will be signed by each leader and their
parent. The contract will discuss the course expectations. The signed
contract will be returned to Mrs. Carzoli, by the required due date.
Students in the Junior P.E. leadership program will demonstrate BHS Pride
through their behavior, attitude and participation. Failure to meet these
requirements may be grounds for dismissal from the program.
The P.E. Leaders program provides students with guidance, instruction and
practice in developing personal leadership skills. The course also provides
opportunities and experience for those who may be interested in
Pursuing a career in education.
Objectives of the Junior P.E. Leadership Program
The students will:
1. Develop an understanding of the importance of key leadership qualities
including responsibility, reliability,
cooperation, initiative, creativity and adaptability.
2. Develop/improve skills in leading team initiatives & knowledge of team/
individual sports and fitness
components.
3. Develop an awareness of department safety procedures.
4. Gain experience working with various age groups. ( i.e. Little Broncos,
elementary, freshman, sophomore and
.
Adapted P.E. students)
Activities Junior P.E. Leadership Program
1. Assisting the teacher with routine class administration. (i.e.,
attendance, equipment,
warm-up exercises and officiating).
2. Develop knowledge of equipment location, supplies and P.E. department
procedures.
3. Knowledge of BHS P.E. Department Freshman/Sophomore activity and
fitness curriculum.
4. Understanding of proper safety procedures in case of an emergency or
class injury.
5. C.P.R. Certification American Heart Association. Cost of C.P.R. card
is $2.00.
6. Participation in various team building & problem solving activities.
7. Training in proper spotting techniques for the sophomore gymnastics
unit.
8. A portfolio of class information, handouts and completed class
assignments will be developed. Students must provide a 3-ring
binder/1 &1/2” with a clear plastic cover.
9. Junior Leaders will have an opportunity to work with the Little
Broncos Pre-school students and Elementary P.E. students in District
220.
Junior P.E. uniform includes: P.E. leader shirt, black shorts and gym
shoes. NO hats!! Cost of black shorts is $12.00. (Required)
Community Service Hours will be a requirement for the Junior/Senior P.E.
Leadership Program.
A handout of specific information will be given to students. The hours must
be completed by May 2012.
Grading & Course Expectations
Students will be graded in the following areas:
a. Daily attendance/participation: 40%
Students will receive
three daily points.
Uniform-1 point daily
Required uniform includes Junior leader shirt, black shorts and
gym shoes.
Attitude-1 point daily
This is based on the student meeting all teacher directed class
guidelines including enthusiasm, sportsmanship and cooperation.
Effort-1 point daily
This is based on the students putting forth a full effort in
the activity offered.
Daily attendance is essential in the role of a leader.
b. Leadership: 30%
Individual/peer assessment, class presentations, facilitation
of initiatives, safety awareness and shadowing experience
evaluations and Leader of the week assignment.
c. Written Assignments: 30%
Portfolio, journaling, lesson plans, observation paper
(shadowing experience), written tests and class projects.
Make-ups for excused absences three options:
a. Option 1: P.E. Department activity make up
A student can make up 3 participation points by attending an
after school activity make up. These make-ups will be held the
last two Wednesdays of each unit from 2:15 pm- 2:40 pm.
b. Option 2: Internet written assignment
Must be typed and attach a copy of the article.
c.
Option 3: Written Assignments associated with P.E./Fitness
curriculum.
Consult Mrs. Carzoli for specific information.
Poor attendance can result in probation or dismissal from the P.E. Leadership Program.
Junior leaders should not have any unexcused absences from class.

sophomore year.
The program provides students with guidance, instruction and practice in developing personal

5. To provide an opportunity to assist other students in Physical Education classes.
6. To provide insights and experience for those who may be interested in teaching or
working in the field of education.
7. To gain experience in management and supervision of small and large groups.
8. To experience working with various age groups. (Little Broncos,
Freshman, sophomore and adapted P.E. Students)
9. To assist the teacher with routine class administration. (i.e., attendance, equipment,

10. To strive for improvement both in Physical Education activities and in leadership skills.

group activities
