We will draw on the use of historical, religious, and social contexts to better understand Pre-Columbian art in Latin America. The course will use slides to further clarify the visual relationships between the art of Meso America (Central Mexico and some parts of Central America) and that of South America (mainly presentday Peru). These sites are critical players in the production of visual artifacts affecting Pre-Columbian cultures such as the Aztec, Maya, Paracas, and Inca Civilizations. We will take as a starting point the paradox that involves the two area’s aesthetic similarities despite their independent development and the large distance between them, as well as critically analyzing their main differences. Jazz Music: David Sanchez Quartet David Sanchez started playing the saxophone at age 12. His earliest influences were afro-Caribbean and Latin music, soon after he was grabbed by the sounds of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. In 1992 he came to the attention of the late Dizzy Gillespie who engaged him for his United Nations Orchestra. Then, learn how social studies and art lesson plans on our Web site link the murals to the classroom. In the afternoon, Dr. George Vargas, cultural historian and muralist, creates Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertes altars, and demonstrates traditional arts they contain, including paper cutting (papel picado) and skeletons (calaveras).
