Adult Art History Class
"The Art of Pre-Columbian Latin
America"
This class will explore the nature and
characteristics of indigenous and local art
before the arrival of the Spaniards in
America. We will draw on the use of
historical, religious, and social contexts to
better understand Pre-Columbian art in
Latin America. The course will use slides
to further clarify the visual relationships
between the art of Meso America (Central
Mexico and some parts of Central America)
and that of South America (mainly presentday Peru). These sites are critical players in
the production of visual artifacts affecting
Pre-Columbian cultures such as the Aztec,
Maya, Paracas, and Inca Civilizations. We
will take as a starting point the paradox that
involves the two area’s aesthetic
similarities despite their independent
development and the large distance
between them, as well as critically
analyzing their main differences.
Instructor: Luz Maria Gordillo, Doctoral
Candidate, Chicana/o, Mexican and US
History, Michigan State University.
Fee: $40; members, seniors, students $32.
Pre-registration is required.
Lecture: "Contemporary Latin
American and Latino Women Artists"
Historian Luz Maria Gordillo explores the
production of female Latin American and
Latino art. The influence that Frida Kahlo
had and continues to have on both Latin
American and Latino women artists will be
the starting point to analyze how female

after he was grabbed by the sounds of
Miles Davis and John Coltrane. In 1992 he
came to the attention of the late Dizzy
Gillespie who engaged him for his United
Nations Orchestra. David had since toured
with various jazz greats such as Kenny
Baron and legendary drummer Elvin Jones.
