Attendance, and Assignments: Attendance is expected at all classes and laboratories. There
will be a 7-point quiz every class except the class of an hour exam. The four lowest quiz scores
will be dropped. No make up quizzes will be given; if you miss a quiz for any reason it will be
one of those dropped. There are seven Challenge Problem Assignments; one is due roughly
every two weeks of the semester. You also are expected to do the assigned problems at the end
of each chapter. You should form a study group with one to three other students to complete the
Challenge Problems cooperatively as well as to review for the exams and quizzes. Your group
will hand in one Challenge Problem Assignment and all members of the group will receive the
same grade. Provided that you have a legitimate and documented reason for missing an hour
exam and that you notify me in a timely fashion, a maximum of one make-up hour exam will be
given during the semester. The Final Exam is cumulative and covers the material for the entire
year.
Laboratory: For the laboratory you will have fourteen assignments over the semester.
Assignment One is a graphing exercise. Four of the assignments will be laboratory reports that
will be typed and conform to the format given in the laboratory manual. Unless otherwise
announced the laboratory reports will be due the week after you finished the laboratory work on
the experiment. The other assignments will consist of the laboratory notebook copy sheets that
will be handed in at the end of the laboratory session. All missed laboratory work must be made
up or you will receive a zero for that laboratory. Special arrangements will have to be made to
make-up a laboratory if you have a legitimate reason to miss a laboratory. You will keep a
laboratory notebook with carbon-less sets of papers. For some experiments you will work with a
partner and for others you will work individually. However, you will be required to submit
individual assignments for all experiments unless otherwise instructed.
Policy on Academic Dishonesty: All types of academic dishonesty are deplorable and will be
dealt with accordingly. Cheating on exams or quizzes will result in a zero on the exam or quiz in
question. All cell phones must be put away during quizzes or exams. You must have your own
calculator; no sharing of calculators. Falsifying laboratory data or copying another student's data
(except when specifically instructed to work with a partner) or laboratory report will result in a
zero for that report.
Tutoring: For your assistance the Department of Chemistry maintains the Chemistry Tutoring
Center (CTC) in Smith 538 under the supervision of Ms Liina Ladon. The hours of operation
are: MTWR 8:00AM - 6:00PM, F 8:00AM - Noon. No appointment is necessary.
Helpful Material: You will be provided a set of learning goals for the material covered on each
hour exam, several weeks prior to the exam. Other useful materials are available electronically.
