On June 24, 2015 in the framework of Ukraine Paediatric Fellowship Program the first visit of the Canadian delegation, in particular Prof. James. T. Rutka, Dr. Myroslava Romach and Dr. Tatiana Lipman, to the NationalCancer Institute took place. Ukraine Paediatric Fellowship Program, based at SickKids Hospital in Toronto (Canada), was established in 2013 to promote an exchange of expertise and knowledge between paediatric clinicians and scientists in Ukraine and those in Canada with the goal of improving the health care delivered to children in Ukraine. SickKids Hospital is considered one of the best children’s hospitals in the world, both for its clinical care capabilities and its research activities. Dr. James Rutka, Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto, neurosurgeon and Director of the Brain Tumor Centre, Project Leader of the Ukraine Fellowship Program Dr. Myroslava Romach, Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, psychiatrist, Medical Director of the Ukraine Fellowship Program Dr. Tatiana Lipman, Scientist, Brain Tumor Research Centre at the SickKids Hospital During the visit, the collaboration between Ukraine and Canada in the field of pediatric oncology was discussed, along with the direct participation of the National Cancer Institute in the charity program “Ukraine Paediatric Fellowship Program” which is supported by SickKids Foundation with partners, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and the Children of Chornobyl Canadian Fund (CCCF). Dr. Olena Kolesnik and Dr. Grygorii Klymnyuk acquainted the delegation with the statistics of cancer among children in Ukraineand outlined the problems and prospects of the pediatric oncology development in Ukraine (children cancer treatmentin Ukraine). Dr. Oleksandr Grabovyy and Dr. Nataliia Khranovska advised the situation and problems in diagnosis of cancer in children in Ukraine, along with the trends, problems and prospects for development of fundamental science at the National Cancer Institute. Delegates had an excursion in the Department of Pediatric Oncology and research laboratory of experimental oncology and molecular genetic diagnostics. As a part of the visit, the Ukrainian-Canadian seminar “Recent advances in pediatric oncology” was conducted, where Prof. James Rutka and Dr. Tatiana Lipman presented scientific talks. The seminar was attended by doctors and scientists of the National Cancer Institute, working in the field of pediatric oncology. Dr. Svergun during the training at SickKids Hospital, Toronto In the discussion participated the Director of the Institute O.O. Kolesnyk, Head of the Paediatric Oncology Department G.I. Klymnyuk, Head of the Experimental Oncology Laboratory N.M. Khranovska, Head of Pathological Anatomy Department O.M. Grabovyy, Head of the Department of Cancer Control Yu.Y. Myhaylovych and scientific researcher Svergun N.M., who became the first participant of the program from the National Cancer Institute and had a training in the department of cell biology at SickKids Hospital in Toronto from March to May 2015. By the results of the visit, the intent to continue the collaboration in the framework of “Ukraine Paediatric Fellowship Program” was suggested. This includes trainings for the employees from the National Cancer Institute at the SickKids Hospital, organizing of joint conferences/seminars and performing joint research projects for the publication in international journals.
