Match each term with its definition by writing the letter of the correct definition on the
line beside the term.
G 1. Genetics
a. the passing of traits from parents to offspring
F 2. Alleles
b. an organism with two different alleles for a trait
D. 3. Traits
c. offspring of many generations having same trait; same alleles
H 4. Recessive allele
d. physical characteristics of organisms that are inherited
I 5. Genes
e. an allele whose trait always shows up if it is present
B 6. Hybrid
f. different forms of a gene
A 7. Heredity
g. the scientific study of heredity
E. 8. Dominant allele
h. an allele whose trait is hidden in the presence of a dominant allele
C 9. Purebred
i. section of DNA that contains information that controls a single trait
Study the diagram. Then answer the following questions below.
9. What trait in pea plants is being studied in the cross above? Height (Tall versus Short)
10. What are the two alleles of this trait? T and t
11. Which allele is the dominant allele? Tall (T) would be the dominant allele
Explain how you know.
I know because the F1 generation (first generation) has ONLY tall plants. This generation
has one allele from each of the purebred plants and so has one of each allele. The
dominant allele is the allele that is always seen if it is present.
12. Which allele is the recessive allele? Short (t) would be the recessive allele.
Explain. The F1 generation has only tall plants so the short allele is hidden. It can be seen
again in the F2 generation.
