I take great pleasure to recommend Miss Luping Xie, an excellent undergraduate student I have
taught and doing research in my lab, for her application to your graduate program.
I am a professor and the dean of Department of Bioengineering in School of Life, Beijing
Institute of Technology. My research group works in cooperation with many world-class groups
in University of California Davis, University of Manchester, Nanyang Technological University
and so on.
I got to know Miss Xie about one and a half years ago, that was in her second semester of
sophomore year, on the course Introduction of Biotechnology that I taught. Miss Xie often has
her own ideas. She is one of a few students who will review and think after class.这个老师怎么

She is an outstanding student with passion of studying on life science. As a sophomore student,
she sent me a voluminous e-mail, in which she pointed out her explanation of the fact that
β-D-glucuronidases expressed by three fungi transformed the same substrate (glycyrrhizin) into
different products (glycyrrhetinic acid monoglucuronide and glycyrrhetinic acid). She said it
maybe they were different kind of enzyme, such as incision and excision enzyme. In the e-mail,
she also showed her desire to do research in my lab.（这句删了，上下会连贯些） Then she read
some correlative papers and wrote a short report to systemically express her understanding of
this phenomena and her research interesting before entering my lab.
Miss Xie is also a fast learner and works very hard. In my lab, she participated in the research
on the effects of glycosylation on β-D-glucuronidase. She became familiar with her topic in less
than two weeks, gained some experimental skills just taught once.（She grasped the core of the

measured catalytic characteristics and kinetics of PGUS-P and PGUS-E (β-D-glucuronidase
expressed by P. pastoris and E.coli respectively) independently in only three weeks, noticing
that was a great amount of work and she could do experiments only in her spare time. After a
series of experiments, she found N-glycosylation could increase substrate specificity and
thermal stability of β-D-glucuronidase. She has written a paper as the second author and
submitted to Bioengineering & Biotechnology.
Thus, I am very happy and confident to recommend Miss Xie to get a further study in your
graduate program, I believe she is a devoted researcher and she will achieve greater academic
success in her future work. I consider her as one of the best undergraduate students who have
worked in my lab. Therefore, I strongly recommend Luping Xie with no reservation.
