MEDIA: tempera paint FOCUS: Students use the loaded brush technique to randomly place sunflowers on the page. OBJECTIVES: 1. Students create a radial pattern with the repetitive use of a loaded brush 2. Students continue patterns by placing the sunflowers in a random pattern. 3. Student uses paint and brush correctly with confidence. MATERIALS AND RESOURCES: 8½ X 8½ assorted colored construction paper, watercolor brush, yellow, brown, green tempera paper plate and paper towels. silk sunflowers, cut sunflowers, van Gogh’s and Monet’s sunflowers, calendar sunflower pictures, the Kansas state symbols VOCABULARY: two color loaded brush, repeat, radial random pattern, odd, sunflower, petals, center, leaves ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES: Color, symmetry, space PROCEDURE: 1. Art teacher demonstrates the correct use of the loaded brush technique and the production of a random pattern on an 8½ x 8½ colored construction paper. 2. At each table place a paper plate with one puddle of yellow and one puddle of brown tempera 3. Each student is given one watercolor brush. 4. Place one side of the brush in yellow tempera. Lift. 5. Dip just the tip in brown tempera. 6. Press onto construction paper. 7. Repeat process in a circle with the brown tips coming together in the middle. 8. Students are given time to create and produce a random pattern of sunflowers. If they finish and fill most of the page they are given green tempera to add some leaves to their flowers to complete the pattern. (I prefer no stems.)
