Supply List for Oily Art: Still Life, Fall 2015 Teacher: Gail Seemann Oil paint of the following colours in an artist quality brand of your choice. I will be using M. Graham because I like the walnut oil base. Most other brands are linseed oil based with possible additions of poppy seed or safflower oil. Minimum colours of paint: (I use M. Graham walnut oil paints. Names of colours in other brands may vary) -Titanium white -Alizarin Crimson (or Alizarin Crimson Hue) -Hansa Yellow (or Cad. Lemon) -Ultramarine Blue -Burnt Sienna -Raw Sienna -Burnt Umber -Yellow Ochre - Phthalocyanine Green (Phthalo Green) -Permanent Rose Mediums: walnut oil or lindseed oil, depending on which brand of paints you use. Also have: -Two 12x16 pre-primed canvases, one of which has been covered with a coat of black gesso. (I have seen black canvases at Michael’s art supply stores, but be warned they are not great quality, but might be what you want for a class) -Table easel -Oil Medium: Linseed oil or walnut oil (depending on type of paint you are using) -Paint brushes: WARNING: Numbering of brush sizes is not standard through different brands. Have a few basic brushes such as a #8 Artisan flat brush by Winsor Newton (or comparable 3/8 to 1/2 inch/1 cm wide flat synthetic), Artisan #6 flat brush (5/8 inch/1.5 cm wide flat synthetic), #2 Artisan (small round synthetic brush with a good point for signing and detail)(at the moment my favorite signing brush is a Sapphire Short Handle Round Brush S85 number 2) and a soft brush for blending such as 1 inch to 1.5 inch wide hake brush. -Metal painting knife -Paper towels, lint free rags (optional) -Pencil, eraser, sketch book or paper -Clean up supplies: We will be working solvent free. I use walnut oil to remove most paint off of brushes, then wash them with ivory bar soap or Sunlight detergent. -Plastic bags because you have to take your garbage home with you. If you like to wear rubber gloves for safety and easy cleanup, I like the blue nitrile gloves. I got a box of 100 at Costco, and they last for quite a while. You can buy a pair from me for 50 cents if you want to try them first.
