Teaching the sounds of English

NB in the process of implementing WTT, students will hear and be exposed to the spoken version of the whole range of English
sounds, as is required for learners of an additional language. The chart presented here is one version of a scope and sequence for
the explicit teaching of
listening
to spoken English and
pronouncing spoken English.
This is best done through activities that use these sounds in natural speech. Rhymes, chants and songs are excellent catalysts
for having children listen to sounds and reproduce them in non-threatening ways.
Games are also contexts for focussing on sounds in ways that children can engage in meaningful yet fun ways. These can be
planned for the Listening and pronunciation exercises in both the Column planner and the Petal Planner.
