Toni Lam 林國瑋
Introduction
After completing his BA in English and Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong
with a First Class Honours, Toni went on to pursue an MPhil in English and
Applied Linguistics at the University of Cambridge on the British Chevening
Scholarship. He subsequently completed his CELTA at International House
London and PGDE at the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a double
distinction in coursework and teaching practice. He also graduated from CUHK
with his second master’s degree in English (Literary Studies) and was awarded
the ‘MA in ELS Academic Excellence Award 2013-14’. Toni is currently a PhD
candidate in Applied English Linguistics at CUHK.
Prior to joining HKUST in 2013, Toni has taught in various institutions, including
Diocesan Girls’ School, St Paul’s Coeducational College, Sacred Heart Canossian
College, Harrow International School Beijing, and the Centre for Applied English
Studies (formerly known as ‘The English Centre’) at HKU.
Academic/Professional interests
Toni’s interests include second language phonology, phonetics, pronunciation,
intonation, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, politeness theory,
psycholinguistics, queer theory, gender, gothic literature, Shakespeare in
performance, non-native English teachers, teacher training, materials writing,
syllabus development, course design and continuing professional development.
