Contractual Arrangements for

Associate Lecturers

1. Introduction

This paper sets out the key contractual conditions for employing Associate Lecturers and is a negotiated agreement with UCU. Associate Lecturers are required to attend the institution for teaching hours, and carry out preparation, marking and scholarly activity in support of teaching.

2.

Role of the Associate Lecturer

2.1 The role of Associate Lecturer is a ‘defined’ role that involves predominately teaching related activity. The Associate Lecturer role will therefore not fulfil the full range of activities as indicated in the adopted Academic Role Profiles (ARPs). The following activities are specifically omitted from the role:

Curriculum development

Module leadership

Course administration

Academic tutoring

Supervising:

(a)

(b) placements fieldwork

2.2 The normal expectation is that Associate Lecturers will not be involved in the following activities, if of necessity they are involved then extra payments at the non-teaching rate will be made.

Membership of faculty boards and committees

Attendance at Boards of Examiners (BoEs)

Where Associate Lecturers are involved in agreed (line manager) staff development activities they will be remunerated at the non-teaching hourly rate.

3.

Contractual Arrangements

3.1 Salary will be paid monthly during the period of teaching and will be calculated by the number of taught hours multiplied by the hourly comprehensive rate.

3.2 This type of contract will normally be used:

 to teach specialist areas

 to teach subjects and programmes where demand is variable or unknown

4.

Rate of Pay

4.1

Associate Lecturer appointments are made according to formal scheduled teaching hours.

The hourly rate of pay is calculated on the basis of the ‘comprehensive scheduled teaching hour’. The JNCHES Guidance indicates that the comprehensive rate is calculated as 2.5 x the basic hourly rate.

4.2 Associate Lecturers will be appointed to scale point 30 within the Ac 2 scale.

4.3 The basic hourly rate is calculated as follows:

Scale point salary/52 and divided by the standard working week for the institution of 37.

The comprehensive rate is calculated by using the basic hourly rate multiplied by 2.50.

Extra non-teaching hours - Rate of Pay

5.1 Extra hours may from time-to-time be required for a range of reasons such as:

Associate Lecturer induction training and development activities

1

Where cover is required for extended maternity leave for more than three months, it would normally be expected that the postholder is replaced by a salaried temporary Lecturer covering the full range of duties rather than by an Associate

Lecturer.

Associate Lecturer

– conversion to “established” Fractional

Appointments

6.1 Associate Lecturers who exceed 204 hours in their teaching year for the second successive year will be offered a conversion to an established fractional appointment at Ac3 level 2 . The figure of 204 hours will be calculated with reference to an individual’s teaching year in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for lecturing staff as appropriate and with the expectation that it was intended that this level of contribution would be sustained. The precise fraction of the contract will be decided by consultation with the Associate Lecturers and the faculty in which they teach.

6.2 Exceptions to the above will include those appointed exceptionally at a higher number of hours than their usual level for a limited period, for instance, to cover for an absent colleague e.g. during maternity leave or long term sickness absence of a colleague.

6.3 On converting to a fractional appointment, the member of staff will engage in the broad range of responsibilities expected of staff at Ac3 level as agreed with their line manager.

2

Associate Lecturers in post who are in their second successive year of employment at the date of implementation of this agreement, will be offered conversion to a fractional appointment this year.
