About the breed
This breed, while bred to be a gundog, can easily adapt to 'pet' life provided they are given plenty
of opportunity to run freely. They love people and are ideally suited to country life, but must have a
well fenced garden.
Character
The Setter loves free gallop and will need plenty of exercise to occupy its mind. They are great
family dogs, love children and are relatively easy to obedience train. They like to be with people
and will not cope well with being left for a long time. English Setters are not the easiest of dogs,
however if you are the kind of person who can cope with them, there is no better breed. Once
smitten, a breed of dog for life.
General care
This is a racy dog and unless given attention and exercise, can be incredibly boisterous. Obedience
training is a misnomer. English setters know what you want them to do but often choose not to
obey. Recall is often non existent. Routine is the key to training. English Setters hate to be left alone
and protest verbally to the anger of neighbours, and can become destructive if they are frustrated.
Breeder's view
English Setters
I founded my kennel of English Setters in 1970 and have diligently bred dogs for their type,
soundness, temperament and ability, consistently producing winners in the show ring. I am now a
breed specialist awarding Champion Certificates since 1987. I also co-founded the English Setter
Rescue in 1973. I am a Kennel Club Assured Breeder.
