Year 7 Assessment: Does God Exist? Your task is to write me a little essay. It’s all about answering the question of whether God exists. You need to consider different reasons people might give for believing in God and whether they are good reasons or not. Remember, there are several key arguments people give: Cosmological Argument – Cause and Effect Teleological Argument – Design in the universe Religious Experience – Miracles can prove God exists? Morality – Where does our conscience come from if not from God? Suggested Structure: 1. Section One – Introduction: Introduce the essay. Perhaps say something about what people mean when they talk about “God”. Then you can explain that some people believe in God, others don’t, others aren’t sure. 2. Section Two – Arguments: Choose two or three arguments for the existence of God and explain how they try to prove the existence of God. 3. Section Three – Analysis: You need this to move beyond level 5. What are the good and bad points about the different arguments? Why do people think the arguments are convincing or not? 4. Section Four – Conclusion: What do you think about the existence of God? Are you convinced or not? Why do you believe in God or not? Levels: Level 4 – Description: All you say is a little bit about the different reasons people might give for the existence of God. Level 5 – Explanation: Here you explain the arguments. For example, you explain why the idea of cause and effect might prove the existence of God for some people. Level 6 – Analysis: As well as explaining what the arguments are, you explain why people might find them convincing or not. This is quite a tricky assignment with plenty to say. You should all do really well if you try hard!
