The Alvin H. Zagor Memorial Scholarship
The Alvin H. Zagor Memorial Scholarship has been established at Washington
Square and University College, New York University. The purpose of this scholarship
prize is to honor the memory of a man whose life was dedicated to provide counsel and
friendship to all who sought it. He had a strong commitment to the scholarly pursuit of
humane studies in our technological and science-oriented society. The fund will make
possible an appropriate forum for the discussion and continuation of his concerns by
encouraging students in appropriate disciplines.
The Alvin H. Zagor Scholarship will be awarded annually to a junior or senior at
the College who has earned a grade-point average of at least 3.50, and whose academic
record and life experience demonstrate wide-ranging interests and concern for the
necessity of the humane studies in intellectual development of the modern professional.
Candidates must have a deep appreciation for, and commitment to, ethical choices and
principles. They must demonstrate as well the conviction that a liberal arts education is a
means of defining the educated person. Strong preference will be given to candidates in
the humanities, economics, political science, journalism, and to students in the prelaw
curriculum.
Each department is restricted to two nominations. A letter of nomination signed
by the Director of Undergraduate Studies must accompany each application.
Departments must submit the completed application, along with the necessary
letter of nomination, to Dean Richard Kalb, Room 909 Silver Center. The deadline for
submissions is Monday, March 28, 2011.
The Alvin H. Zagor Memorial Scholarship for 2011 will be $1,000.
Dr. Zagor earned his A.B. from Washington Square College Class of 1936. He
received his L.L.B. and J.D. from St. John’s University, Class of 1939, and his J.S.D.
with the Class of 1940. Dr. Zagor joined the Bachmann Uxbridge Corporation in 1939,
and served as its Vice President from 1952 to 1961. Later he became associated with the
East New York Savings Bank as Pension Consultant and served in that capacity until his
death. He was a member of the American Association of University Professors, the
American Bar Association, the American Judicature Society, and a Fellow of the
International Academy of Law and Society, among others.
