Young Musicians’ Bursary Competition

The Canterbury Festival Foundation supports exceptionally talented young musicians in
East Kent, helping them to pursue their musical training through its annual bursary of up
to £2,000 and the opportunity to perform at the Canterbury Festival.
If you are:

A talented young musician, or classical vocalist
Aged 12-18 (or under 25 with special educational needs)
Living in East Kent
Then please fill in the application form below and pass it to both your teacher and parent to
add their comments/signatures.
Successful shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend auditions where three Junior
musicians (12 – 14 years) will win the opportunity to perform in a special Canterbury
Festival concert this October. Six Seniors (15 – 18 years) will also be selected to perform at
the same concert to compete for the cash prize. The six Senior Finalists will also be given the
opportunity to use the final as part of achieving an *Arts Award Bronze or Silver
Qualification, supported by Canterbury Festival.
* Arts Award, a national scheme for young people up to the age of 25 to gain qualifications
in the arts, is for the first time being embedded into the Bursary Competition. For more

Festival Concert for your School
We would like to offer your school the chance to apply to take part in the Canterbury
Festival School Lunchtime Concert Series. These concerts take place between 31 Oct – 4
November at the Festival Spiegeltent, and are an excellent opportunity for your school to
showcase the talents of its young musicians to a Festival audience. Schools will be selected
from those who submit an entry to the Bursary Competition.
New for 2016: Arts Award
The Festival is keen to work with schools which are directly delivering Arts Award. For more

Terms and Conditions:
Entries will be shortlisted by an independent panel who will select young musicians for the
auditions on Thursday 16 June at Simon Langton Boys School. Details of the auditions and
concert will be sent out to those who are selected to audition. Complimentary tickets to the
final concert will be allocated only to the performer and accompanist (if applicable).

Performance requirements:
Audition: All musicians should prepare a 4 minute piece (or excerpt) and a brief spoken
introduction. Musicians must provide their own accompanist and outline any technical
requirements (to be kept to a minimum please)
Final concert: Junior musicians will perform for 4 minutes and will introduce themselves
and the piece they are going to perform. Senior musicians will be asked to perform for no
longer than 7 minutes in duration and must provide their own accompanist. They are also
required to prepare a brief spoken introduction to be given before they perform, explaining
the choice of music and how the bursary would be of benefit to them.
Session(s) on developing public speaking skills will be offered to finalists closer to the final.
