Course description
A practical course for literacy coordinators, class teachers, school librarians and
support staff. We will explore the importance of reading across the curriculum and
identify ways to develop reading skills and enjoyment across all subject areas.
Expected learning outcomes
· more knowledge of the role of reading across the curriculum and its place in terms
of Ofsted, the new national curriculum and latest research
· greater awareness of the literacy skills needed in different subject areas
· strategies for developing oracy, reading and writing skills and comprehension
· ways to embed subject-specific vocabulary, information skills and critical literacy
· ideas for authentic, real-life literacy contexts and reading materials
· ways to involve specialist and non-classroom teachers
· methods for using subject-related books to support literacy and wider learning
· strategies for fostering reading enjoyment through subject teaching
Cost: £100 (inc. lunch)
The Course will be lead by Anne Harding who is an independent trainer. She specialises in children’s and
school libraries and children’s and young people’s reading. Westminster Schools Library Service has used
Anne extensively in the past. Feedback from the last course we ran on “Reading for Pleasure” in October
was very positive...
