2013 MINNESOTA LIVESTOCK BREEDERS’
ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS
The Minnesota Livestock Breeders’ Association Scholarship is presented each year to 4-H and
FFA youth who are active members and exhibitors during the year of application. The
participants are selected based on experience and personal growth through their 4-H
experiences. Additionally the scholarship rewards excellence in academics and achievements
in livestock production.
Setting a new record this year, MLBA is awarding $44,000 in scholarships to 31 outstanding
youth. That is an increase of $18,000 over last year and a $41,000 increase since the first
scholarships were awarded twelve years ago. Also new this year is that 13 of the scholarships
are $2,000 in value and 18 are $1,000. “The support from the greater livestock community is
phenomenal and very appreciated,” Steve Pooch, MLBA Secretary.
The scholarships are sponsored by leaders and supporters of the livestock industry and
matched by proceeds from MLBA purple ribbon auction. Each year during the MN State
Fair a purple ribbon auction is conducted selling the premiums of outstanding youth
livestock exhibits with 78% of the funds going directly to the youth and the remaining
invested in the scholarship fund and expenses related to the auction.
