CATALOG DESCRIPTION This course introduces the study of Interior Environment with emphasis on the principles and elements of design, space utilization, color, materials, and current trends in residential housing. TEXTBOOK(S) Allen, Phyllis Sloan and Stimplon, Miriam F. 9th Ed. (2000). Beginnings of Interior Environments. 3D Home Interiors Deluxe 2.0: Broderbund Software (This software can be purchased in the LBWCC Bookstore or online at, nothingbut software.com) Item # 26457 TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS A. General requirements . A personal computer (not Web TV) with Windows 200 or XP (computer labs are available on all three campuses) . A VGA (or equivalent) or better monitor . Reliable Internet access. (If using a dial-up connection, at least 28.8k modem is Recommended. Slower dial-up connections will affect course performance. If you are an AOL user: You will need AOL version 7.0 or higher) . Netscape Navigator/Communicator 7.1 higher or Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher . Sound Card . Most recent versions of plug-ins and viewers. These are free additions to browsers that allow students to view special course components such as video, clips or animations. B. E-Mail address TOOLS AND SUPPLIES Assorted construction paper, Three ring binder or notebook, Stick on labels, colored pencils or crayons, Crayola Washable Kids Paint 6 colors plus black and white, and three (3) paint brushes with rounded points, 12” ruler, Glue (Stick or blue Elmers), 3 pocket folders with three hole prongs, one 12x16 poster board. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon the completion of this course the student should be able to: 1. Identify components of the principals and elements. 2. Implement and utilize occupied spaces. 3. Describe current motifs. 4. Select proper materials. 5. Utilize Brewster Color System. 6. Demonstrate knowledge of fabrics related to style for residential housing. 7. Introduction and application of basic computer techniques and software. TEACHING METHODS A variety of tests, weekly work assignments, projects and student involvement exercises will be used to address different learning styles. ATTENDANCE POLICY In a web class students are still expected to accept responsibility for covering the assigned material and completing assignments of time. The student is responsible for keeping pace with the assignment calendar. This requires a mature attitude and selfdiscipline. Tracking of student activity and performance will be conducted every week unless otherwise stated. WITHDRAWAL College catalog page 30 EVALUATION PROCEDURES Tests 20%, Weekly Projects 20%, Midterm 20%, Final Project 40% Students taking IND 240 for online academic credit will be required to complete the following: Assignments are to be turned in at the end of each week given. Submit work through email, postal mail or hand deliver. Videos are available for viewing through Tegrity at LBWCC’s web site. WEEK 1: Introduction to 3D Home Interior Software. Book: 3D Software Assignment: Install 3D Home Interiors software. View Tutorial and practice navigating in the software. Download the manual and read Chapters 1 and 2, PP 1-37. Create a floor plan. Submit design as stated above. WEEK 2: Basic Functions of 3D Home Interior Software Book: 3D Home Interiors Software Manual Assignment: Read PP 39-60 in manual. Create a bedroom design. Save design. Submit design as stated above. WEEK 3: Advanced Techniques of 3D Home Interiors Software Book: 3D Home Interiors Software Manual Assignment: Read PP. 63-93 in manual. Create a kitchen. Place objects on top of objects (Counter tops on cabinets, etc.) Save design. Submit Design as stated above. View video RMI C18-1 “Where to begin”. Critique video and write a paragraph describing most important facts presented. Submit as stated above. WEEK 4-5: Chapter 2: Principals and Elements of Design Book: Interior Environment Assignment: Read Part II- chapter 2 PP75-93 and make an outline of chapter. Make floor plan and place windows and doors with 3D Interiors. Submit design in color. Save project. View Video RMI C18-4 “Principals of Design”. Critique video and write a paragraph describing the most important facts presented. Submit as stated above. EXAM: Written test will be open book. WEEK 6-7: Chapter 3 Color Book: Interior Environment PP 95-118 Assignment: Read chapter and place color on walls and place carpet and ceiling with 3D Home Interiors. Save project. Submit design in color as stated above. View video “Color” and video “Color with Confidence” RMI C18-09. Critique videos and write a paragraph describing the most important facts presented. Submit as stated above. EXAM: Written test will be open book WEEK 8-9: Part II Chapter 4 Lighting (Mid Term) Book: Interior Environment PP. 149 Assignment: Read Chapter 4 and make outline. Place Lighting in a floor plan. This will be done on the computer using 3-D Home Interiors program. Print a 3-D picture of the virtual room with lighting in place. Include the type lighting and style and a brief statement of why you chose this type and style. Save project. This picture should be an extension of the room you have been making from week 1. Submit your design as stated above. EXAM: Mid-Term must be taken on campus or proctored. Approved proctors will be found in the policy and procedures manual. (Access the Policy and Procedure Manual at (www.lbwcc.edu) and click on Distance Education). Follow instructions. WEEK 10-12: Chapter 9 Textiles Book: Interior Environment Assignment: Read Chapter 9 Gather swatches of five natural and ten manufactured fabrics. Label swatches and give their content. This should be put in a three-hole report type file folder. Each fabric should be labeled and neatly mounted to a piece of construction paper. View video –Textile Research Center Field Trip. Critique video and write a paragraph describing the most important facts presented. Submit as stated above. EXAM: Written test will be open book. WEEK 13-14: Furniture placement Book: Interior Environment Assignment: Place furniture in the room you have created with 3D Home Interior. Submit design in color. View Video RMI C18-22 “Furniture Mix and Match”. Critique video and write a paragraph describing the most important facts presented. Submit as stated above. WEEK 15-16: Review Books: Interior Environment Assignment: All chapters and 3D Home Interiors Software EXAM: Final – Swatch Board and 3D Interior Design. Submit as stated above MAKE-UP POLICY Any pre-scheduled exam missed must be made up the last week of the semester unless other arrangements are made. *File folder projects, live work projects, and outside assignments are due on the day set. Work turned in on time will receive bonus points LATE WORK If work is not turned in, you may receive a zero (F) or “I”.
