CLASS TITLE:
NETWORK SPECIALIST
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Technical Services Coordinator, install, maintain and repair networking
and telecommunications equipment; perform programming of VOIP telephone system; install,
maintain and secure network operating systems and network servers; provide supporting
documentation and training to users.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Participate in the design and redesign of network infrastructure for the District. Maintain
a current knowledge of networking electronics, network server operating systems,
workstation operating systems, and standard software applications. Recommend to
supervisor changes that need to be made to keep data networks, servers, and
workstation client software current.
2.
Perform operations tasks on networked servers and their operating systems, network
electronics, and academic and administrative software running on District servers. (E)

Troubleshoot problems with computer networks and correct problems in network
electronics, servers, and client computers as required. (E)
4.
Provide work direction to student workers, hourly assistants and vendors. Approve work
done by vendors on the District's data network infrastructure.
5.
Provide training to other district employees in the basics of network/telecommunications
structure, equipment operations and develop protocols for other staff to solve simple
network-based problems.
6.
Install, program, troubleshoot, and maintain Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area
Network (WAN) hardware, including wiring components, servers, switches, hubs,
bridges, routers and gateways. This includes external network connectivity and security
devices; maintain records of work and documentation of configurations. (E)
7.
Operate user databases, backup procedures, disaster-recovery procedures for network
servers. (E)
8.
Provide on-call support for production servers, network systems and computing
infrastructure (rotated weekly throughout the group).
9.
Install, upgrade, repair, and terminate copper feeder and building cables, and fiber optic
cables.
10.
Perform VOIP telephone system programming. (E)
11.
Install, configure, and operate network monitoring and security software. (E)
12.
Attend meetings and workshops presented by vendors of hardware and software
networking/telecommunications products; recommend and assist Coordinator in ordering
equipment and materials.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
At least one network operating system.
At least one server operating system.
Basic electronics theory and practices.
Data networking concepts, applications and installations.
Knowledge of theory and operation of LAN and WAN hardware and software.
Basic electrical wiring.
Networking hardware: routers, switches, hubs, transceivers, network interface cards, fire walls,
network/telecommunications security devices.
Tasks associated with network administration.
Oral and written communication skills.
Recordkeeping techniques.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
ABILITY TO:
Read technical drawing (schematics) and technical materials.
Perform skilled work in the installation and maintenance of equipment.
Troubleshoot networking/telecommunications equipment.

Troubleshoot networked software applications.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to an Associate of Arts degree plus three years of direct
experience in the installation and maintenance of networking and telecommunications
equipment, a multi-node/multi-site computer WAN, microcomputers and peripherals. Knowledge
of one programming language required.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license with acceptable driver record per District standard.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
No permanent staff assigned.

CONTACTS:
Coworkers, administrators, faculty, staff, network service providers and vendors.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Moderate physical labor including frequent standing, walking, bending or stooping; occasional to
frequent lifting, carrying, pulling and/or pushing of objects weighing 50 pounds or less; ability to
work at computer including repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices;
ability to travel and/or drive to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct
district business
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions
and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or
groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to
concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending
to other responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on a variety of tasks
concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in indoor office, instructional lab or classroom environments; subject to
occasional working: outside during inclement weather, in confined and/or awkwardly configured,
poorly-lighted work areas, around high voltage and electrical panels; exposure to computer
operation noise; Subject to frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone,
intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion; may work at any College
location during day and/or evening hours with occasional holidays and/or weekends on an asneeded basis. Occasional local travel may be requested.
