Imperial College London Job Description Job Title: Clinical Research Fellow Section: Infectious Diseases Division: Infectious Diseases Department: Medicine Job Family: Clinical Academic Scale Salary Range: £31,838 - £56,312 per annum plus £1,505 London Allowance per annum Responsible to: Sarah Fidler Location: St Mary's Campus Contract: Full time, fixed term for one year Summary of the Post This post is based in the Infectious Diseases Section of the Department of Medicine, based at the St Mary's Campus of Imperial College London. There will be at least four clinical sessions at the clinical trials unit, St Mary's Hospital, leaving up to six sessions for research, teaching and administration and audit for Imperial College. You will be clinically responsible for the out-patient medical care of patients or volunteers on clinical trials as required. You will work under the clinical supervision of Dr Sarah Fidler and also closely with the research nurses and the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit, and Clinical Research Organisations. You will be given an Honorary Clinical Contract with the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and office accommodation within the academic department. Secretarial support will be provided from within the Section. Background The Department of Medicine is sub-divided into Divisions. Clinical research and teaching is based at several hospitals within West London. There is a rapidly expanding portfolio of clinical research at the HIV clinical trials unit based at the St Mary’s campus of Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust. Imperial College has an extensive programme of postgraduate teaching and training that will be available to the Clinical Research Fellow. It is envisioned that the successful candidate will enrol into a research MD programme. Main Duties and Responsibilities Research To have a good knowledge of HIV prevention strategies including vaccines and microbicides To provide screening and follow up medical care and documentation and accurate completion of study CRFs in accordance with clinical trial study protocols and provide medical care in accordance with GCP To ensure up to date training in current GCP practices To be responsible for the a set of studies in our HIV prevention program including Phase I HIV vaccine trials in healthy volunteers To take initiatives in planning and conducting a research project and ensuring the timely execution of such research To identify and develop suitable techniques and apparatus for the collection and analysis of data To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times including maintaining accurate and complete records of all findings. To present findings to colleagues at internal and external meetings (travelling within the UK and abroad when necessary) To draft publications for submission to refereed journals To contribute to the drafting of grant applications To ensure appropriate consent for research is obtained from the relevant patients To assist and help supervise post-graduate students and visiting worker To promote the reputation of Imperial College Clinical responsibilities The post holder may hold an honorary contract with the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and may be expected to undertake clinical duties appropriate to their level of experience and expertise Clinical management of participants in HIV clinical trials (both HIV infected subjects and healthy control subjects) To be completely conversant with all aspects of the medical management of HIV infection and opportunist infections as a consequence of immunosuppression and complications of ART To attend medical emergencies as necessary - Cardiac Arrest, Resuscitation To act as medical support to nursing staff To prescribe medication for outpatients Clerking of patients and maintenance of accurate and up-to-date medical records and completion of study CRFs Complete examination of all study participants under the direction of the Consultants Ensuring that the Consultants are kept well informed of their patients' conditions Maintain good communications with nursing and paramedical staff on all aspects of patient care To manage emergency referrals at the request of the patients or Consultant, including both in-patient and outpatient services To provide a phlebotomy service in the absence of the phlebotomist or study nurse To organise and take part in teaching sessions and clinical meetings To develop links with the clinical services to enhance enrolment and recruitment into clinical trials within the department To provide cross-cover of medical colleagues working within the clinical trials unit on other studies in their absence Other Duties To undertake appropriate administration tasks To attend CSC research meetings and seminars To undertake any necessary training and/or development Any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post as directed by the PIs The post holder will be expected to contribute to the intellectual activities of the Department and to keep up to date with scientific advances in the field You may be eligible to register for a higher degree, and must comply with Good Clinic Practice and all laboratory regulation and safety protocols You will hold an honorary clinical contract with the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and will be expected to take clinical responsibilities appropriate to their level of experience and expertise.
