Imperial College London Department of Materials and London Centre for Nanotechnology Magnetic nanostructures for cancer cell treatment: targeting and imaging with highresolution electron microscopy Duration: 36 months A studentship is available in the Biomaterials group at Imperial College London starting October 2012. This award will cover tuition fees and a tax-free maintenance stipend (including London weighting) of approximately £15000 per year, and is available to home and EU students. The project will develop magnetic nanostructures for the targeted killing of cancer cells. The student will focus on two aspects of the work: controlling and characterising the nanostructure surface so as to effectively target cancer cells, and highresolution electron microscopy imaging of cell-nanoparticle interactions. The project is an collaboration between Imperial College and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. The student will develop an unusually broad range of skills and knowledge, combining soft matter, nanotechnology and cell culture with 3-D electron microscopy. The project would suit a graduate in Physics, Materials or a related subject with a strong academic record and an intense enthusiasm for applying their skills to a biomedical problem. Prior knowledge of Chemistry and biology is not essential as full training will be given. Candidates should have received at least a 2:1 in their first degree. How to apply The prospectus, entry requirements and application form (under ‘how to apply’) are available at: http://www.imperial.ac.uk/pgprospectus. For more information on Departmental research: http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/materials/research/phdopportunities The project is supervised by Dr Iain E. Dunlop, Dr Alexandra Porter and Prof. Molly M. Stevens. Informal enquiries may be addressed to i.dunlop@imperial.ac.uk or a.porter@imperial.ac.uk Closing date for applications: 14 September 2012 Committed to equality and valuing diversity.
