January 30, 2013 Update Notes
“Supplementary Tables S1-S14 Version 3 1.30.13.xlsx" tracks all the updates to the
supplementary tables S1-S14 made after ACP publication on May 3, 2011. Version 3 was posted
on January 30, 2013. Supplementary table updates include changes to S4 (temperate forest) and
S6 (chaparral) to include recent measurements published in Yokelson et al. (2013) and Akagi et
al. (2013).
The various types of temperate forest fire emissions measurements are shown in separate
columns in Table S4. The best overall averaging scheme depends on the application and we have
implemented a generic solution here. Emission factors for temperate wildfires are taken as a
weighted average of pine-forest understory, organic soil, and coniferous canopy EF (for those
species in which no temperate wildfire data was available). The final temperate forest EFs are
calculated as the average of pine forest understory, temperate wildfire, and temperate debris EF.
This average weights each fire type equally for applications where the fire sub-type is unknown.
For temperate forest and chaparral fuel types, final EFs shown in supplementary tables S4 and S6
supersede published EF from Tables 1 and 2 of Akagi et al. (2011).
Extratropical EF published in Table 1 have also been updated (extratropical EF are computed as
a weighted average of boreal and temperate forest emission factors) and are found in
"Extratropical Version 3 update 1.30.13.xlsx".
Note that we have reorganized the compounds in order of increasing mass for all updated tables,
which should make locating values for specific species easier. We hope to expand that
organizational format to more fire-type categories when recently completed experiments probing
these fire-types are published.
