Table 1. Sexes of progeny following crosses of S. menziesii and S. salicaria. All females of S. menziesii (categorized by phenotype) were crossed to heterozygous hermaphrodites of S. salicaria (Hh) derived from control lines of a quantitative genetics experiment (Sakai et al. 2008). Heterozygosity of hermaphrodites of S. salicaria was previously confirmed (crosses to females of S. salicaria [hh] segregated females and hermaphrodites). Individuals of S. menziesii used in crosses were designated by the field population number (vouchers at US), the ID of the tagged field plant from which seeds were collected, and the ID of progeny derived from the field plant. Hermaphroditic individuals of S. salicaria were designated by the parental population, the family ID from a partial diallel cross, and the ID of progeny of the plant within the family. Each maternal parent was crossed to two different paternal parents. A. Crosses of S. menziesii and S. salicaria that segregated both females and hermaphrodites. G values testing a 1:1 ratio of progeny were not significant, with one exception (* P<0.001). B. Sexes of progeny following crosses of S. menziesii and S. salicaria that segregated only hermaphrodites or nearly all hermaphrodites. A. Crosses typically segregating approximately equal numbers of females and hermaphrodites. Crosses between Schiedea salicaria and plants from the hybrid zone. A. Sexes of progeny following crosses of female Schiedea salicaria and paternal hermaphroditic plants from the hybrid zone. For those crosses that segregated females and hermaphrodites, G tests were based on an expected 1:1 segregation. One hybrid (902-108-1) was crossed as a paternal parent to two different S. salicaria females. G values testing a 1:1 ratio of progeny were not significant, with one exception (* P<0.001). B. Sexes of progeny following crosses of a hybrid plant used as a female, and two S. salicaria hermaphrodites heterozygous at the sex-determining locus used as male parents. † indicates a possible case of contamination (1 female in a total of 202 progeny).
